We are having our first kid in a few weeks. How do you family baws get out on the range/course? Any drills you can do at home to stay sharp? I'm scared my days of twice a week driving range and playing just about anytime I choose are gone for the next few years. Can't wait to be a dad but I wish I could do both.

They gone

If possible practice putting in the house
Practice chipping in the back yard
Try to work in swing thoughts and positions in garage

Hope your new child wants to become a golfer

Your Saturday morning money game a turn into Saturday morning soccer and tee ball games....not that any of that is bad - but golf becomes a very distant activity one you have young one

Good Luck with everything

You'll be surprised at how much you aren't needed in the first couple of months. If your wife is nursing every 3 hours and the baby is napping, they probably won't even notice you're gone.

I have a 1 year old and it's much harder to get out now than it was when she was brand new.

I have 2.5 acres, a hitting mat, and a flag about 90 yards away.
I buy cheap 56° wedges from Academy and keep them outside until they rust and break... This makes it really convenient to walk outside and hit balls.
I try to keep my wedge game (scoring clubs) decent so when I do get to play my game is serviceable.
After hitting a whole milk crate of balls I usually go out with the wedge and chip them to the flag to work on short game.
Then I pick up all the balls and repeat.

I bought some of those Almost Golf balls to work on my long game but I rarely do that because I don't make the effort to get my golf bag out.

Welcome to the struggle. I'll agree with the post about work schedule. I pulled that one out last Friday

+1

You can also start trying to play more by yourself. If you get the first tee time on a Saturday or Sunday morning (while most people are in church, if you go to church just go Saturday / Sunday night), you will be wide open on the course and mostly alone.

I can play 18 in the time it takes me to play a typical 9. I normally play 18 in about 1hr45min to 2hrs15min, when I am alone with a mostly open course and a cart. Get out there for 7am be home by 9:30.

Typically the wife won't be too upset by this. If the baby sleeps good at night it is a moot point, but when the baby doesn't sleep well they normally crash in the morning anyway so the wife can get some rest while you are chasing balls and hacking about.

THIS, play as much as you can now. Set the tone that you will continue to play as often as you want. This will also help your wife to become independent

and to you possibly becoming independent, with only half your shite. And knowing my wife, she knows what half I like the most and that would be the half she would go for. I'll let you in on a little secret, it is the half that includes my golf stuff.

That's not how it works

And the advice I gave him is exactly what I did. I play golf whenever I want and am happily married

I have a 2 year old. Lunch break chipping and putting is a big help for me. It keeps my game somewhat sharp when I dont play for a month or so.

I'm a big fan of the 4:00 twilight round. You can get done really fast if you play alone or with just one other person. I can tee off at 4:00 on a Friday and meet the family for dinner by the course by 6:30-7:00.

In all honesty, it depends on you and your wife. I know young fathers who play all the time. Typically their wives grew up with dads who played. I know young father's who love e golf but would rather hang out at home than gogo lying.

Early morning weekend rounds become your friend and weekday rounds if your job allows it. If I can be done by lunch my wife has no qualms but she's knocked up with our 2nd...may feel different with a newborn and 3 year old.

Been there done that. My kids are now almost 4 and 2. They love coming play golf with dad. Granted, you can't do both, but one at a time is simple. They get to ride on the golf cart, eat M&Ms and hold the flag.

I have 2 boys, one is 4 months and the other almost two.

I am able to get to the range once a week by leaving work early and play every other week, sometimes more.

Just make sure you offer her free time to make up for the time you will be away.
