We are trying to do our first club championship this year. There is much debate about how it should be structured.

It's a 9 hole rural course with the majority of the members not having an official handicap. We want to motivate as many people to play as possible. Looking for suggestions from other people's experiences.

Right now, I am thinking of a 2 day tournament that is flighted after the first day. Only the winner of the championship flight gets their name on the plaque. But flighting will draw the higher handicap golfers to come out and play even if they know they can't win the whole thing.

Ours is match play, flighted by handicap. If there are more than 16 guys that want in the championship, we hold a qualifier.

I would suggest a modified Stableford system that does not penalize you for making worse than Bogey.

No legit handicaps, our course isn't even registered on the handicap system

What you described sounds good. If you have 2 or 3 sets of tees, you can have people declare the tee they wish to play beforehand, obviously only being eligible for the name on the plaque from the back tees.

One other suggestion. We used to have a Club Champion's Dinner sometime after the tournament, and would distribute the trophies then. The last year's winners of each flight, and all of the previous Championship Flight winners could come (a la Masters Club champions dinner). It was a lot of fun, and made for a nice tradition. Unfortunately, the leadership at the club changed, and they quit making a big deal about the Club Championship (Le Triomphe ).

You mean a quick paragraph on the bottom right corner of the newsletter isn't a big deal?

If you are playing 18 holes each day, inform all players that a nine hole score from the first day will determine flights. Draw either front or back after first day of play. This cuts down on sandbaggers as the won't know which nine will be drawn.

Flighting after the first day when you have a bunch of golfers without established handicaps sounds like the potential for some serious sand-bagging. To help prevent that from occurring, the rules should state that after play begins for round two, the tournament committee or Pro will draw a random number from 5-8 out of a hat (or a playing card) and anyone that improves by that number of strokes or more on day two automatically gets bumped up a flight.

I saw this rule for a three-day four ball tournament and it was applied after the second round where an unknown team from out of town had a 7-stroke lead on the fourth flight (and their score put them one stroke off the lead in the third flight). They got bumped up and then DQ'd after they got pissed and didn't show for the final day. That tournament paid $1,000 gift card to the winner of each flight so they tried to prevent the obvious sand-bagging.

We hold a one day qualifier and the top 16 get seeded in a single elim match play tourney. The finals is a 36 hole match play
This will be the 2nd year in a row that one of the top 4 or 5 players won't be in because they are out of town for the qualifier. I wish they would make it so there are 2 different weekends you can qualify.

my club has a nice prize for registering to play - each year it is a nice item.

club provides a tee time party the evening before - there is beer, wine, liquor, food, etc.,,,mainly bourbon

club provides a nice lunch Saturday and Sunday

The pro flights everyone - and does an excellent job

Suggestions:
Have a money pot for a hole in one

Have some beer water, Gatorade, powerade, and food available for players at the turn

For the men's tees, don't tip them out - leave that for the horses playing for the Club Champion spot.
