How has Lee Westwood, with his superior ball-striking ability, never won a major?

He was regarded for years as the best ball-striker on tour, and seemed to have been good getting up and down around the green.

Has his window closed and if not, how does he go about winning a major? I don't see it being a Masters, maybe a British or US Open title?

Putting, mental game, correct reads, scrambling.

You have to putt.

Half this board is a better putter. I also think he's a bit of a mental midget, but it's mostly putting.

It's what happens when you cough. He and Paul Casey biggest best chokers in Europe golf. Right there, then puff.

At that level of talent, player abilities, etc, most of a player's issues are "between the ears". Some have recognized as such, and have mental coaches. But, 'ya gotta bring it to the course...

I used to play with a guy who was an amazing player with his irons.

Club championship one year he sticks one on #2 about 2 feet from the cup. This is after missing a 4' birdie on one.

Straight in, pretty flat. Most of us just walk up and bat it in, even in tournaments this isn't one we break a sweat over.

He backed off it twice. The rest of the group all knew he wasn't going to touch the hole. He didn't, and he missed the 18 incher coming back.

Hit 18 greens that day, didn't have a birdie putt outside 10 feet, and holed one from the fairway to boot.

He shot even, and finished 4th in the group.

So he was inside 10 feet in regulation every hole? Cool story. Not remotely true.

Ask anyone in Russellville Alabama who has played at least 20 years at Twin Pines CC who the worst putter they ever saw is.

Then ask them who the best iron player they ever saw is.

9 of 10 will tell you the same name. The 10th will argue Butch putts worse.

Definitely true story. The big group there could play some serious golf.

The tour is full of guys who can hit fairways and greens. But if you don't have it between the ears and can't putt you will never win consistantly or much less win a major. Bobby Wadkins, (Lannie's little brother), was one of the top 10 ball strikers of all time, but could'nt putt a lick. He never won a tournament on tour in over 20 years.
