Hitting out the Bunker

Any advice on hitting out of greenside bunkers? The last couple of rounds I have had to take penalties because I'll hit my shot out of bounds out of the sand. I would just be happy hitting it out of the sand anywhere on the green two putting and moving to the next hole. I have never been good out of the sand but do have some good shots here and there.

open stance
open the shite out of the clubface
cut across it and hit right before the ball
find a practice bunker somwhere and live it in it for an hour or two, bunker shots take practice.
make sure to accelerate and dont quit on it
make sure to use the bounce of the club and dont dig the leading edge into the sand

Squat like your sitting on a chair, put your weight on your front leg and leave it there (don't shift back on the back swing)
The other thing I think people miss is how the club head needs to be through impact... on regular shots, you rotate it back to square through impact. On bunker shots, it needs to stay open all the way through... think about the leading edge of the club like the blade of a machete, and you're cutting a tee out from under the ball. If you're chopping cane with a machete, you don't rotate as you swing though because the side of the blade would hit the cane. Same concept with bunker shots.

Thanks. My problem is the open clubface, quitiing on the ball, and not practicing enough. I usually cut across the ball and hit right before it but I know I dont do it every time.

A really common mistake is decellaration. Make sure to still accelerate through impact, if you make a good swing you aren't going to hit it to far.
Also a good tip I got once was, imagine the ball is sitting on Washington's face on a dollar bill. You want the club to enter the sand at the back of the bill and come out of the sand at the front of the bill.

I like to use a square stance, open the club face, weight on the left side. I take it to left arm parallel with some cupping in the left wrist. From there I'll just focus on keeping my right shoulder moving forward.

This may be getting a little too specific for someone who is worried about hitting the ball OB from the bunker, but it also matters how the sand is. Hitting from soft sand is completely different than hitting from a bunker that's wet or has very little sand in it.

Thats the problem at my course. The sand is so inconsistent. I know Im not helping my situation by not doing things that has been mention already in the thread.

When I'm digging in my feet before I hit my shot, I'm generally able to tell how the ball will react from the sand.
Now this may not be perfect advice, but for me if it's wet or if there's very little sand I almost play more of a pitch shot with an open face. Thick or soft sand I'll take a bigger swing for the most part with an open face as well. Ball is almost always at the front of my stance.
Only time I won't use an open face in a green side bunker is if I get a fried egg.

Focus on a spot about a half inch behind the ball and don't decelerate.

Green side I always use a 60 degree. Open stance, and give a full swing without trying to kill it. I also aim for the largest portion of green to help with confidence. "I dont have to get it close, but just on that huge portion of green"
ETA - Ill also choke down a bit so that if I miss, its not way out of play. It makes me hit before the ball as well and not skull it to oblivion.

usually this is where many fail. they take big back swings but decelerate on the way through. spend time at the practice range in a bunker to get the feel of a nice "thump." use the bounce of your wedge by opening it up.
once you "get it" it's actually not a very difficult shot

I try to just chop down on the ball especially around the green. Higher the ball comes out, the better for me. If a fairway bunker, forget it I just take whacks and hope.
The key for any bunker shot to me, is deep knee bend, if knees bent you are good. If not, you will dig to China.

I am going to sound crazy but it is probably the biggest reason why I am awful out of fairway bunkers.
I play all wedges and putt left, everything else is righty. I am natural lefty but growing up they did not have lefty clubs.
I know I am confused, but it just feels better for me.

I am used to it now and I do not think I could hit a driver or iron with a lefty club.
I know it is mental and if I took the time to start swinging lefty all over the place I probably would be able to pick it up quickly, like I did the wedges.
