Not as green as it is during the tournament. I guess the bent grass gets tourched and they take sand out of the traps. Check it outLINK

Apparently they rip the entire thing up once a year

It's closed all summer long from a few weeks after the Masters until October.

Obviously costs aren't an issue. But does it need to be done every year? I'm obviously not an agronomist.

The club has closed during the summer since its founding. They do all their maintenance and have covers for the greens to keep them shaded. Bent grass in the south.
They usually won't even talk about any of the changes they've made. First rule of fight club...

The whole course is Bermuda that serves as the base for their overseed every year. That's why they play in April before it gets too hot.

Yea, the Shell Houston Open course looked as shitty when i played it a few weeks ago. Apparently it has something to do with letting the soil rest before they over seed it pre tourney.

Augusta is a winter course. It's seeded with some form of rye/blue grass that dies off in the hot summer months. Like others have said it closes a few weeks after the Master. They do an appreciation day for the volunteers and then they shut it down till next fall.

Thanks to all who provided info on why AN is closed during the summer.

Go play Fallen Oak after the Champions Tour event, the overseed is dying off and the course looks like garbage. (Greens are still awesome though) Found this out last year when I played it

Pretty cool. Thanks for sharing that

I understand the reasoning on why it looks bad in the summer, but it's still pretty wild to imagine it looking NOT pristine.

Looks like the traps are covered with plastic.

This. Annual rye grass that peaks in spring in the south and burns up in the summer. I've read that the rye seeds come from Oregon but it's pretty hush hush on the supplier.

Bingo. Go check out other tournament courses that overseed like others have said. They take a beating transitioning to summer. Rye competes for the resources of the bermudagrass and leaves a lot of it in bad shape.
Augusta does a high rate of overseed. They know they are gonna lose bermudagrass each year. Just a matter of how much.
I'm glad people are realizing Augusta isn't perfect 24/7.

Do they re-pine straw it every year as well? The pine straw in the video is faded and not the dark red we are used to seeing in April.
Also that video shows you just how hilly it is and how small the greens are.
