Since the last major PS4 update, I recall seeing something about being able to install disc-based games to external HDDs since the included 500GB HDDs wouldn't hold no more than a few full disc-based games. Can someone confirm whether or not this external HDD will work for that feature?

I would think it would. Although I'm not an expert. I use a WD and works just fine.

Can you actually play the games off them? I put a 1tb hd in my PS4 and put the 500gb one in it's case and used that as a buck up. But I recall you couldn't actually boot and play the games from an external.

This was from February,
quote:

“With this update, you have the option to store content to an external HDD. Just plug a USB 3.0 HDD into your PS4, and voilà, you now have more space on the console.”

The update supports USB 3.0 hard drives up to 8 TB in size, and you will be given the option to install and download games directly to the external hard drive. “Also, all the applications saved in the external HDD will appear in the Content Launcher of the Home Screen so it’s easy to keep track of what apps you launched recently,” t

So you should be good, and this is freaking awesome news. I was looking to clear some space, some disc based games take up more space than the ones I downloaded digitally, now I won't have to delete games and download them again if I want to play them down the road.

This is exactly what I want to do. I hate waiting on the download/install process when I put in a game that I haven't played in a long time and therefore deleted to make room for a newer game in the past.

I got tired of load times so I got a hybrid 1TB drive and replaced the original HDD. How are write/read times with an external HDD? FO4 got so damn annoying with load screen wait times for me. That's what drove me to get the hybrid.

Yes. I have it. I used it on my PS4 and when I got my PS5 it was just plug and play transfer. Can play PS4 games off it, not PS5.

Only thing is if power goes out you have to troubleshoot the reinstall and it takes like 15m
