I have a tough time believing that the PS Vita and new WiiU portable consoles are really going to have any success in the tablet era.

I think the market will be reduced to only really hard core gamers for those device sales.

What say you?

Probably not. Consoles even the portable ones are pretty stable devices that do not change a lot. It is a whole lot easier and cheaper for developers to create games for a platform that will there for more than 1 year in that position.

With all of the flavors of tablets and a new version coming out for each one almost every year, portable consoles will probably hold on to that corner of the gaming market.

I don't really know if that many hardcore gamers are
going to be waiting in line at midnight outside of a gamestop just to get the Wiiu.dreamcast fail.

The Wii U isn't exactly portable. You need the actual console with it. Its just a controller with a screen. I don't think that really applies to your argument.

As far as the Vita goes, I think the Sony handhelds didn't have a chance even before tablets came around. You could maybe attribute it to smart phones, but even then, the PSP was overpriced and was pretty worthless. The support for it was quite lacking. IT killed itself.

The Vita is headed down the same path, Sony keeps increasing the price, the memory is sold separately (which is just plain stupid) I do think that the tablet factor will definitely not help the cause, but I think that Sony's all around business plan for the handhelds is what is making them fail.

The one thing the Vita does have going for it is the launch lineup.

3DS is doing pretty good right now. I don't think Nintendo will ever be dethroned as the king of handheld gaming.

Tablets and smartphones are putting a dent in the portable gaming market, but I think a bigger reason that portable gaming market is going down is because of the price and audience. For example, ps vita is basically like a portable ps3 (maybe slightly worse graphics?) why spend $300 on that when you can just get a console bundle for the same price? Excluding the small % of people who travel frequently for long periods of time and little kids, who wants a small portable gaming device as opposed to a console. I personally have been really suprised at how sony and nintendo continue to push out these portables, despite the poor sales.

They are, after the price drop and actual games coming out for it, it's doing quite well. I love my 3DS (mainly for nostalgia reasons: LoZ:OoT and Star Fox 64 remakes ftw).
