Out of Dominion (or Dominion Intrigue), Ticket to Ride, or Stone Age.

Anyone familiar with these and have any suggestions?

A litte background: I have just recently gotten into Euro style games. Only two I currently have are Carcassone (which I love) and Lost Cities (which I like alright)

The majority of the time I play it is only with two players also.

You didn't list this one, but Settlers of Catan is easily my favorite board game.

Dominion is awesome but there are lots of expansions that you will also want. I think there's a box you can get with the base game and the first two expansions to get you started though.

I assumed he already had it... Catan is one of those games that every board gamer should be familiar with.

THIS right here.

Also, a good card game with friends while drinking is Cards Against Humanity. Hurry, it's $25 on Amazon and they go fast.

it's an adult Apples to Apples. Great party game.

I'd have mentioned it but it's not really a board game... lots of fun though.

I have all of those, I run an after school board game club at the school I teach at. Ticket to Ride is enjoyable and very very easy to play, but it gets old rather quickly. Dominion and Dominion Intrigue are amazing games that kids and adults would enjoy, you will get more replay value out of them. I prefer Intrigue over the original as it involves more interaction between the players. Settlers of Catan is a great game as well.

Would getting Intrigue without having the base game first be a mistake, or is that perfectly fine? Because Intrigue sounded slightly more appealing to me as well.

I have thought about Catan as well considering it is the grandaddy of these type games, but I have read from some places that is a little dated and more luck-dependent than the others. Plus it doesn't play two players, which is a deal-breaker.

Yeah, it's a great game. There are two expansions, too. Well worth the cost. And if you go to the CAH website, they have a 30-card Christmas expansion that you can get for free, or you can pay if you want to support CAH.

Settlers of Catan, how may players?

Never heard until recently. Played Axis and Allies and Fortress America board game so something new would be good.

How interactive is it? In other words, is it a quiet game or can I pummel my opponent with derogatory remarks while I win?

We've played Catan with as many as 6...I think that's the max. And it's a game that is very interactive-you have to build a settlement according to how the dice rolls and the board and a big part of the game is making trades with the other players for resources (wood, brick, ore, wheat and sheep). It might sound lame on paper, but once you start playing it is really, really fun.

Not as derogatory as CAH, but it's still fun.

CAH isn't the type of game I was looking for at all, but it does look fun as hell with the right crew.

...that's the main thing with CAH.

Ensure you are playing it arround people your age with a sense of humor and more importantly an understanding that there will be some crude, racial, and horrific things said.

my cousin found it in my truck over Thanksgiving. She's 3 years older than me. prissy, conceited, snobby fat obnoxious bitch. Said we should play it, it looks fun.

I immediately told her, "No, it's not for this side of the family. I'm sorry."

Either works. But since you're new to the game, get the base set if you're only getting one box. Add more boxes later if you like it. Gameplay becomes more varied and interesting the more you add.

base game is 3-4 players, with an expansion for 5-6.

and the trading for sheep/wood/wheat/stone/bricks allows for lots of fun interactions between players
