I honestly don't see them shutting down the servers ever

I'm sure blizzard has some critical point at which they will transition the game into free to play, but yeah the servers aren't going down for at least another decade I would imagine. As tired as I've gotten of the game, it still doesn't really have any legit competition.

MMO's are dying off though. Companies try making them too large to compete with WoW, and they end up spreading their development time and funding over too many pieces and the end result is a large game where nothing is good quality. Even Blizzard knows this considering they were making another MMO and transitioned it into an FPS game.

I always think about restarting my WoW account but I do not have a laptop capable of raids right now and no desire to put in the 2-6 hours I need to stay near the top.

If Star Wars Galaxies hadn't been raped and killed I would most definitely still be playing 13 years later.
The SWGEMU is up and running. Still technically building the game, but it has a vast amount of the content of old.

For me, when the first expansion came out, that was it. My friends all broke out to level alone from 60-70. And when that happened, we never came back together. I was the top hunter in the 2nd best guild on my old server, and I just stopped after that.

I'm not sure when WoW will die, but

I think they have what 6 to 7 million players still sending 15 bucks a month?

they have been steadily losing players over the last few years, and are no longer publicly releasing subscription numbers.

They seem to have long breaks without content updates, and I don't think there is appeal for "new" players.

I just canceled my WoW sub. Came back for Legion but WoD seemed to have changed the WoW I knew during Cataclysm. Yes I missed about 4yrs of changes but damn the game seems dead.

Legion seems pretty solid from a leveling perspective. Most players will enjoy the experience I think. Raid and pvp tuning is too far off to get a good feel for that experience though.

All this talk of Nostalrius made me try a vanilla WoW private server.

Lol

How many people actually play on that?

Kronos. No idea on population, but I assume this is where most of the Nostalrius population will flock to. I just started today, but as of right now, there are 50 people in Teldrassil.

I actually raided in a horde guild on PVE Nost as a resto shaman and it was pretty awesome. Made a lot of friends again from Scotland, UK, France, and Germany. Was pretty bummed to log and see they were going to shut down the servers on 4-10. I enjoyed it much more than the current state of WoW though.

I've always known about private servers from a particular era of WoW, but I never realized there was a server as popular as Nostalrius which was more active than any single retail server.

It kind of got me wanting to investigate other servers. According to Reddit, Kronos averages around 5K players between both factions.

Given how much press the Nostalrius shutdown received, one would assume Blizzard has only called attention to these servers. A lot of people probably had no idea the could go back and play Vanilla until they saw it trending on Facebook.

The golden era of WoW at least for me was WotLK, but I wanted to experience something different. Ideally BC, but I don't know any good BC servers. It's usually vanilla or Wotlk

I enjoyed the leveling from 90-100 in WoD. Difference between MoP and WoD, to me, is MoP kept me interested until WoD released. WoD hasn't done that for me. I've leveled a few alts, but that's about it.

I agree with some on here, Legion will bring a lot of people back.

I haven't been playing as much as I had been. HFC got really old pretty quickly. Playing other games until Legion release.

While Legion may not bring the number of subscribers back up into the 10 million range, based on what I've seen thus far, I think it will be the best expansion since Wrath.

A LOT of people were saying that during the buildup of Warlords. Unfortunately, we see how that turned out.
