When did we go from simple Mario to basically playing a playable movie with a plot?

When did the shift happen?

When did the main focus go from gameplay to the story?

- Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness (1981)
- Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (1981)

- Déjà Vu (1985)
- Tales of the Unknown, Volume I: The Bard's Tale (1985)
- Dragon Quest (1986)
- Might and Magic Book One: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum (1986)

Sometime between 1981 and 1985/1986.

There are plenty of both.

I can't stand online multiplayer due to zero story or context. Just rinse and repeat the same maps over and over. Then the next year prettier game, new maps. Same gameplay over and over.

Not as much a shift as it is growth. A couple of things have happened since the old days. Back then video games were for us kids. We grew up, so did our games. At the same time the gaming market has exploded, and the industry is able to target specific demographics instead of worrying about whether their next big blockbuster has as broad of an appeal as possible. That casual market is still dominant, but competition is more fierce, so in a way the behemoth publishers have no choice but to compete in every market.

Gaming is a big industry and it allows creators to express things in ways they weren't able to 10-20 years ago. As tech improves and gaming grows, you should expect more experimental games and overall variety.

FF7 and OOT being released a year apart in 97/98 seemed to introduce several more high budget epics

The day I beat Ocarina of Time was one of teenage Banana's crowning achievements at that time. IT WAS SERIOUS.

Me too, I was just trying to find the point when gaming turned into a serious, story-driven narrative as opposed to a gameplay focused game like Mario Brothers.

Technology - games with better graphics meant that you could tell a story with beautiful imagery. That said, there's still tons of games with simplified gameplay - but they aren't major releases. Major releases are all about the next, biggest thing. Just look at the evolution of Mario himself.

So, when did it happen? Probably with the advent of the RPG, and then the subsequent boom of RPG-style play. Even FPS shooters have RPG elements (leveling up, etc).

These days your biggest games (aside from sports games) are either:
A.) MMO
B.) Story-focused

What's funny about this quote is that Mario marked a shift im gaming. Before Super Mario Bros everything was focused on getting the high score (a leftover from arcade gaming)

Mario was the first mainstream console game to shift the focus on playing a character rather than racking up points.

This is probably when the tide shifted.

The story telling in RPG's influenced every genre out there.
