It's combat is most similar to something like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. It has open-ish world (meaning that you can explore a bit but it's not just a sandbox), a heavy plot/character focus, and use a pretty normal loot/upgrades/XP system.
It's most similar the original Nier, but most people didn't play that. It has the normal side quest fare and multiple endings to challenge yourself with. It combines a lot of from other genres as well (like side scrolling SHMUPs and twin stick shooters) to create a pretty unique game.
