Tripwire President - Call of Duty "compresses the skill gap."

Almost every element boiled down to “it doesn’t feel like Call of Duty.” And really, watching some of these guys play… one of the things that Call of Duty does, and it’s smart business, to a degree, is they compress the skill gap. And the way you compress the skill gap as a designer is you add a whole bunch of randomness. A whole bunch of weaponry that doesn’t require any skill to get kills. Random spawns, massive cone fire on your weapons. Lots of devices that can get kills with zero skill at all, and you know, it’s kind of smart to compress your skill gap to a degree. You don’t want the elite players to destroy the new players so bad that new players can never get into the game and enjoy it. I’m looking at you, Dota.
quote:
But the skill gap is so compressed, that it’s like a slot machine. You might as well just sit down at a slot machine and have a thing that pops up an says “I got a kill!” They’ve taken individual skill out of the equation so much
quote:
So you see these guys—I see it all the time, they come in to play Red Orchestra, and they’re like “This game’s just too hardcore. I’m awesome at Call of Duty, so there’s something wrong with your game. Because I’m not successful at playing this game, so it must suck. I’m not the problem, it’s your game.” And sometimes as designers, it is our game. Sometimes we screw up, sometimes we design something that’s not accesible enough, they can’t figure it out, we didn’t give them enough information to figure out where to go… but more often than not, it’s because Call of Duty compressed their skill gap so much that these guys never needed to get good at a shooter.

“it doesn’t feel like Call of Duty.”
I like the bit before that too.
quote:
What did they complain about?
Gibson: It’s the gameplay mechanics that they become used to. The way that players instantly accelerate when they move, they don’t build up speed. “The weapons really don’t have a lot of power” [in RO2]. They’re all very weak. The way they handle… They’re like: “I hate Red Orchestra, I can’t play it.” Well, why? “Because the guy doesn’t move like he does in Call of Duty. Call of Duty has great movement.” Why is it great? “Because it just is, I just like the way it works.” So you don’t like the momentum system in Red Orchestra? “Yeah, it sucks, it’s clunky, it’s terrible.” Well, why? “It’s just because I’m used to this.”
I make it sound like there was a combative conversation, probably because I get a little emotional when I think about it. But it was really a calm discussion of, “What don’t you like?” and “It doesn’t feel like Call of Duty.” Almost every element boiled down to “it doesn’t feel like Call of Duty.”

This could be said about DotA, Counter-Strike, etc.
League of Legends has dumbed down the MOBA genre, Call of Duty has dumbed down the Shooter Genre, World of Warcraft and Diablo 3 dumbed down online RPG's in general.
It's an appeal to the casual gamers, which come in more numbers than hard core gamers. And for the hardcore gamers out there like me, there will always be games I can go to to test my limits. Will there be less people playing those games? Yes. Will the experience be better for me though? yes.

League of Legends is on a different level than those other 3 in terms of dumbed down...
it's still VERY easy to differentiate skill levels in LOL

Compared to dota (which the game is based off of), it is dumbed down.
They nerf and buff champions and items based on the amount of crying on the forums. They don't balance the game around the pro scene at all, but instead balance it around casual players.
Pendragon actually banned a player for pressing the random button (that Riot implemented) because it wasn't considered "sticking to the meta". Riot games is an even bigger joke of a company than anyone related to the Call of Duty Series.

Honestly the guy just seems a little butt hurt that some people didn't like his game. I'll be the first to tell you that the skill gap has decreased in each CoD since CoD4, but to say it has made an entire generation of gamers bad it shooters is pretty funny.
Don't even start with this shite
If this where even remotely true, then Darius would have been nerfed 6 months ago and not this month.
Name a single champ that
1. Wasn't overpowered
2. Got a significant nerf because of the forum.

Auto-aim in blops 2 is infuriating. Its far more noticeable In this one than others

I might bitch about how this game helps newbies out, but it's still painfully obvious who the cream of the crop are.
Every CoD you can put people in tiers, you have the elites (Momo, Pevy, Anti types that just demolish kids) usually hovering above 2.0, you have the greats that usually hover around 1.6-2.0, the goods that chill around 1.2-1.6, and then average, below average, and terrible.

This is one of the reasons why there is a hate/hate relationship between BF3 players and CoD players. Battlefield players love Battlefield because it's not CoD, and CoD players hate Battlefield becaue it's not CoD-like.
There are many reasons Medal of Honor Warfighter is not a popular game, but the "it's not like CoD" hurdles players have to jump over just to get into the game are a barrier. Even though I think Warfighter is actually a better, more tactical and team-oriented game, CoD wins out because so many players at so many skill levels can just jump in and jump out fairly easily and feel like they've done well. After a week off from Warfighter, I jump into a lobby and promptly go 1-9 and 2-7 in my first two games before getting the hang of it again. A CoD player goes 1-9 in a game that's not CoD and obviously the game sucks.

I LOVED socom 2, probably more than any game I will ever play. The second I picked up the COD franchise it became impossible for me to enjoy other shooters. I've tried playing some of the more recent socoms and they just don't do it for me. Same thing with Battlefield.
I'm not saying those aren't good games it's just extremely difficult for me to enjoy other shooter platforms at this point.
Although if all my friends switched to another shooter I could probably enjoy it.

i have the same problem trying to play a FPS that is not COD
I've been playing COD since COD3-7 years or so
I liked BF3 and i will buy BF4 when it comes out, it's just really hard for me to play it b/c it's so different

quote:But here's the thing...you swear off CoD, just like you did for BO2, and then go play Skyrim. I'm not saying Skyrim isn't a great game, it's just that if you really wanted to give BF3 a chance you know you would get into it. It's just not something that you can immediately hop into and "get" right away.

Red Orchestra is pretty awesome, I haven't played since the first one but I'd definitely laugh at some kids jumping from COD to that game. I wonder if he is talking about console FPS players complaining about his game (PC only) or PC COD players.

At the beginning of blops I was terrible and got my arse whooped every game
That didn't stop me from playing. The game was fun as shite and eventually I became good at the game
