I built my current rig at the end of 09 beginning of '10, shes old but has served me well and plays every game I have attempted to play and then some.

Core i7 2.8ghz
8GB ddr800(I think thats what it was)
two 750 gb 7200 rpm hds
And some GeForce card, that I have no recollection of

Anywho, whats the techies using these days? Intel or AMD?

GeForce or Radeon?

Gonna try and keep it all around $700 or so.

If you want a legitimate discussion of these brands, I seriously hope to god this gets moved to the gaming board.

But what I'll tell you right off the bat is that at your budget, you are going to need to go with AMD for both the CPU and GPU. All the brands have their place in gaming builds, but at the lower-end budget, AMD dominates in bang for buck, particularly when looking for a rig optimized for gaming performance.

However, even from the vague specs you provided, it's likely you can get away with just a GPU upgrade. You ought to find out what you're running and give more specifics. Particularly, your motherboard, PSU (specifics), and your exact GPU. Shouldn't be hard to figure out since you assembled it yourself anyway.

If you just want a new build for the hell of it, though, I can do a part list for you, with the assumption that the $700 is for tower only.

Here is some other components I upgraded a while back not included with my most recent upgrade.

And a bunch of sleeved wires to boot. Here is my case. Fractal arc midi:

Thats what the tech board is for!

Initially I was just going to upgrade my HDs to a SSD and run one of the 750s as a storage (I think one is going bad, getting sector errors) but I think I my brother is going to buy it for like 2-300 so he has a computer he can at least play games like D3 on.

I dug up my order from NewEgg, but I added another 4GB of memory after the fact.

How important is the gaming aspect? There are a few different ways I can do the part list. Honestly, the worst thing about that build is the graphics card. Everything else would still be fine, even good, for gaming.

$700 would get you a new build with a very slightly better CPU, basically the exact same RAM specs, and an updated motherboard. The biggest improvements would be on the GPU, and an SSD (fitting in a 128GB SSD for OS may still involve some slight corner-cutting on some parts). What level of overclocking have you done/do you understand/are you interested in?

I don't OC anymore, I did it back in the day with an AMD Athlon 1.4 and it didn't work out to well.

I know technology and all has changed since 2002 but it just doesn't interest me anymore.

I pieced together some stuff on Newegg, came out to about $750 excluding case.

Eta I game mostly on my XBOne but I want to keep the option open to game on my pc.

Dude that CPU is fine. I would just upgrade your graphics card and save yourself some money.

Then building a new one from scratch would be a poor use of money, especially with a $700-750 budget. Even if I made the part list (guaranteeing it would be the best performance for the money), you'd still get better performance by throwing a $250 280x into your existing build, and maybe adding a $60-70 SSD for an OS drive, rather than building a from-scratch build for $700-ish.

Interested in seeing what your part list has, though.

Overspending on the motherboard.

I thought you were doing a build from scratch and selling the old one. If so, you'd still need at least a new RAM kit, case, and PSU.

Now you're just talking semantics...

I didnt really research any of that stuff, it was in a 10piece $1200 bundle from Newegg that I just picked a chose from.

I'm thinking about maybe running a water cooling system this time, and possibly a bluray burner. If I sell it to my brother for 300 then I can build a 1k system and still technically be in my $700 price range.

With a $1k budget, you can maybe squeeze some kind of all-in-one CPU liquid cooler like the H80i... Useless if not overclocking, and taking $80-100 out of that $1,000 budget that could be put toward something better.

What resolution are you gaming at?

Are you serious with this shite? I have loyalty to neither brand. He named a budget, and there are objective, clear-cut performance advantages at certain price points.

This is just ignorant.

1680x1250 is what I think I'm set to.

This is my recommendation for a $1,000 build. Well, it's $1048, but I wasn't going to cut any additional corners to make the liquid cooler (Corsair H100i) fit precisely in the budget. The price includes rebates, which you should always care about, because rebates and promos often save you $100+, and hardware manufacturers always honor them as long as you follow directions.
