It's shocking how a game can be released with characters that bad. By the end of the game, you'll want to punch almost every single party member in the face. It's insane that someone got paid to write characters like this.

For me it was FFX. I know a lot of people like FFX, but the shitty voice acting and linearity became a staple of the genre with that game and I hate it for that. The voice acting really isn't much better than what you posted.

Star Ocean 4 was such a baaaaaaaaad game. The gameplay was fantastic, but almost everything else was really bad.

That's what kinda blows my mind about Star Ocean 5. Game isn't amazing, but to get an average below SO4 is insulting. Although, I didn't hate every character. The last two you get (Myuria and the guy with scythe) were cool.

The absolute worst character was Lymle. I really liked the gameplay of Star Ocean 4 but my god the characters were so bad. The only not horrible character was Bacchus.

It kills me how bad this series has fallen off after a Second Story. That game was one the most amazing, addictive RPG's I've ever played.

I loved X when it came out but you aren't wrong. People are unwilling to see where that game failed and it did in many way while also doing many things well.

and see, I didn't play 4 due to the stupidity of the story of Til the End of Time

Looks like I saved myself a lot of angst from doing this

Yeah the gameplay was probably what kept me going. I skipped some cutscenes or flat out ignored some of the long ones.

The bosses in this game can frick off though. None if the real bosses have health bars, so you keep whacking at them over and over never knowing if you've even made a dent. Most every boss has super high defense where hitting them in any location aside from its weakspot is basically like tickling them. This makes most boss fights drag on for 15 to 20 minutes. Trying to direct your brain dead party members to attack the weakspot or just to get yourself in position becomes a source of frustration. Other bosses just have a ton of HP. The final boss took me 45 minutes the first time and probably 25-30 the second time after I leveled up a bit.

Not every character is truly horrible, but even the tolerable ones have annoying traits. Arumat is the brooding loner type. Myuria says "boy" after every sentence in which she addresses the main character like Lymle says "Kay."

Once I got off Lemuris, I replaced her asap and put her out of my mind. Sarah Jerand might actually have been far worse than Lymle, but she's the best healer in the game.

Star Ocean 5 was inoffensive in every way. There was really only one moment in the story that had me rolling my eyes (as opposed to every time the characters opened their mouth in 4), I liked the characters and the interaction between them, and the battle system and character progression was addictive.

Star Ocean 4's combat was certainly a bit more balanced but 5's gives you much more freedom to how you can tailor your characters and you can swap out skills for various situations.

In the case of both games I appreciate the simple to understand hard to master nature of the combat and character progression of both games as opposed to the Tales franchise which I enjoy but always found character progression abstract and confusing -- the battle system moreso.

Funny, I enjoyed 4 but I thought 5 was garbage

It was the first Star Ocean I played though
