Help me, I suck.

Just bought a Wii U from a friend. Tips? Who is the best to fight with? Best remote to use for the game?

Regarding the remotes, I ordered several Gamecube remotes with the adapter.

That's the only answer.

And Smash Bros tends to be pretty balanced. There are few characters that just suck. The new one, they're still tweaking the tier list, so we honestly don't really know who is the best. Here's the most recent voted tier list, but as I said, it's mostly relative: LINK

You see that Rosalina is apparently at the top, but I would by no means encourage a newb to play as her since she's very complex to control. The highest ranked one on that list that is easy to control is probably Diddy Kong, followed by Pikachu. Smash Bros takes a lot of practice with a single character to really become "good" with them.
