My hard drive went to shite today, and I'm thinking about going with a SSD in my macbook. Anyone have any recommendations for a good one?

I have a 13" late 2011 model macbook

Any SSD brother.

Look into the OCZ Vertex 3 and Agility 4s right now. They are super cheap with OCZ going bankrupt and Toshiba taking over.

Other than that, I recommend Samsung 840 EVO 120 or 250.

I am considering doing this myself for my 2009 MacBook. I have everything backed up on an external hard drive using time capsule.

My understanding is that I need to download my OS onto a thumb drive, swap hard drives, boot from the thumb drive and download the OS, and then restore from my last save on the external HD.

Am I on the right track?

That seems right.

I went with the samsung 840 EVO 250. I'll report back in 2-3 days after I get it in and installed.

Intel, Samsung, and Crucial are the only ones you should consider IMO. They do the most testing and validation.
