I have literally never played one Pokemon game.

Would I be lost if I bought this?

There's not too much of a learning curve. The main thing you'd have to learn is what elemental type is strong against the other. Like fire is strong against grass, grass is strong against water, and water is strong against fire.

What is the facination with these games?

Is it the collecting aspect?

Battle system?

It's an rpg where any monster you see you can recruit onto your team. Then if you lvl them up enough they change into a stronger form and you're trying to become the strongest trainer in the pokemon world by battling other trainers. You can also battle or trade with your friends. The battling system is a pretty basic turn based system, but isn't too bad.

That was a kid's game and always will be in my mind. I missed the boat.

Same. I was much older. My childhood was Star Wars and the like. There's no way I could enjoy it now.

They've made it a lot more friendly to the user as far as stuff in the original games that was just....monotonous and boring. They've also included orchestral scores and guitar shredding in some songs like Wally's Theme and the Battle Frontier boss theme.

Each Pokemon game brings something new to the table as well as new strategies and ways to acquire Pokemon. It's something that if you really grew up with and followed religiously, you can't get enough. More games are fine with me because the total package is what I take in before I make a decision on whether or not it's a good game. Music, characters, atmosphere, story, etc. This one looks very promising, so I'm very hyped.

The pokemon games are quite deep for RPG's. Tons of customization options for building your roster. That's the appeal, at least for me as an adult.
