Sega Genesis question (repair issue)

Have any of you dealt with the games not saving, once you shut off the Genesis, then restart? I'm not sure whether it's the game system or the games that's the problem.
Certain games would have previous data on it, however if I wipe out saved data, start over, save, shut down and restart that doesn't save. Besides a hammer, I couldn't think of a second option.

Sounds like the battery inside the cart is dead which isn't surprising given they are most likely 20+ years old. If you dig around online you can find a way to change it but may need to sauder

Those games are saved on the cartridge, not the console.

I went through about 20 games with the same issue. Just seemed unusual, but should be expected with how old they are.
