Oh is that what they do now?
When I had one back from 2008-2010 or so maintenance was just like PSN/any online game, meaning it was offline.
Regardless, maintenance is maintenance, part of playing online. Normally servers need to be offline for maintenance then rebooted after maintenance is performed.
It's free, can't complain.

It's happened many times before. The longest outage I remember was 4 or 5 days. They had to credit a lot of MSP to Gold members as an apology. This happens to everyone.
