the guy has an $800 budget and may not be willing to build. The question was more pertaining to what kind of resources those programs use and what benefits. Obviously memory is important. how important is the gpu and vram? multiple core cpu? how many is enough? will running these applications on an ssd help? how much hdd space will he probably need? 500gb?

Gpu is very important for rendering. That's why enterprise grade gpus like nvidia Quattro is like 4k.
A lot more programs are starting to support openCL which is what AMD is great for. Nvidia has cuda. AMD has openCL.
I would find out what the majority of the programs supported(Cuda/openCL) and pick the card based off of that.
