Original Donkey Kong SNES

Never had a SNES growing up, just sega. Played a few levels of this game at a friends house and found it pretty difficult. Now, 20 years later, I download it onto my WiiU and give it a go. Just played the level where he and Diddy are on the mine cart.
Holy. Hell.
Took me 45 minutes to beat.
How in the hell did 8 year olds beat this back in the day without failing out of school? The timing had to be JUST right and I am assuming it's just going to get harder. Makes Mario look like a little bitch. I'll be back for some more tommorow though!

Donkey Kong games are hard as frick. They have been since the beginning of time. Ask any arcade enthusiast and they will all tell you Donkey Kong is the hardest classic game.
And the new ones are harder than frick as well. Just realize this about the Donkey Kong games: there is a pattern that you can solve and get through the level without dying. There is a method to the game's method. Unfortunately though it takes at least 15 deaths per level to figure out the method to the madness. It's a hard game, but not frustratingly so. It's quality platforming.

At the very beginning of the level jump down the pit and toward the left.

It's a lot like Battletoads, there is a pattern you have to do.
I used to do it with my eyes closed to show off as a kid

DKC 1, 2, and 3 for snes really are some of the best platforming games ever made.

This is one of the best games ever. They promoted the heck out of it and it lived up to the hype. Great platforming, music...just solid.

Was a great game. I remember waking up at like 5am with my dad to go get it from Sears on the day it was released. I think it was the first time I did something like that. DKC blew my mind as a kid.
If you want glorious torture, get Tropical Freeze. I'd argue it's harder than DKC.

Already downloaded
It's on the back burner for now. Wanted to play through the classics first before starting this one.

Almost all Donkey King games are hard as hell.
You will die. A lot.

I was so ticked at Tropical Freeze that I put it down for a month or so. A game of that difficulty is so rare (pun intended). Also, so unforgiving. Rayman was hard, but the game is designed to be constantly repetitive. DK, not so much.

The bosses are hard as hell too. Had to play that Owl more times than I can count. I thought the easiest boss (the polar bear) was also the most fun.

I have a Wii U, but somehow have yet to play Tropical Freeze

Such a hard game.
IMO the original DKC was probably the biggest jump in graphics presentation I ever remember as a kid. Remember playing it thinking Holy shite this looks incredible.

DKC 2 is still my favorite game of all time.

So I hold the very unpopular opinion that DKC3 was the best of the original trilogy. It's been over a decade since I've played them in depth and I'll be replaying all 3 of them on Wii U this summer so we'll see if that holds up.
I'm also very excited about dk64 reaching virtual console although it's not a dkc game in spirit or in gameplay.
I don't think there is a series that I love more than dkc, IMO the greatest 2d platformers of all time.

Interesting that this thread is here...I recently bought DKC for SNES and it just came in a couple of days ago. I never had it as a kid, but there were these two kids I used to babysit for a friend of my mom's and the boy had DKC. So my "babysitting" used to consist of me playing DKC for hours.

I felt that all 3 games were pretty much equivalent in terms of quality. I was always more partial towards DKC 2 because it was the first one I ever played.
