As for climbing, play the most op meta champs that you know how to play. Play carries or heavy enablers with lots of engage, cc etc.
And yes you can't really rely on your team. Sometimes you get carried, but you must play like you won't be.

I've found a LOT of success with Nautilus (top).
Has excellent engage if your team needs it, but more importantly, he is a peeling monster with crowd control for days.
If your team isn't blatantly retarded, the enemy should never be able to touch your carries with the peel you have as Naut.

One more pro tip if you want to climb: If someone on your team locks in Kindred, dodge immediately.

She's gotta be a tough champ to balance. With her passive, the slightest buff can make her roll through teams. I play her every now and then and do decent, but not great, because the early game is so punishing if you don't get marks.

She's a really cool champ design. Unfortunately the overall balance for her has been atrocious. I don't think she is quite in the Ryze zone, but no one else really is except the legend himself.

Every time I have one on my team, they die early and often, ult at all the wrong times and generally have no idea what they are doing.
I have never played him, so I can't speak to the champion itself, but I can definitely tell the players playing him, have no idea what they are doing.

My winrate was garbage until an 11 game winning streak the past three days. Everything went from going horribly wrong to going perfectly right every game. Even overcame a few feeders along the way, most notably a 1/10 volibear top. That said, me coming back into form certainly helped. My individual performance from a jungling/support standpoint improved as well, although that can be attributed to not having chimps in lanes too.

Unfortunately I didn't help that any. We got stuck with a Talon top so we won early with no frontline but when it came time to group our comp was damn useless.
