the Wii U generation in general has been a step below and over the last year abysmal. Some of the worst selling/reviewed titles Nintendo has ever made.
What games are you referring to? Sales are obviously important for the life of the company but I don't personally base my buying decisions on whether a game is selling well. I do, however, care if a game is reviewed well by people in the games industry I trust. How is the Wii U any different from previous Nintendo home consoles in regards to hits and misses?

What?

The best version of Smash Brothers. A unique Mario that was still awesome. Yoshi's Wolly World. Pikmin 3.

They also published Wonderful 101 and Xenoblade.

The thing is, a lot of folks don't agree these entries were up to standard expected (doesn't help that just about every new entry is worse than its prequel, only sequel I thought was better was MK8). Smash Bros 4 might be shorted lived than Smash Wii. 3D World was a big disappointment as a 3D Mario coming from the near perfect Galaxy 1/2.

And I even removed Mario Maker which isn't a bad game, just not really what people wanted.

3D world is redonkulous fun

Unfair to hold it to those expectations

I agree, Wii U has a weak library but I bought it because my Wii broke. The combined library is insane

Who? If we're just talking about the aggregate gaming reviews...

GameRankings - Smash Bros.
Super Smash Brothers Melee: 90.52%
Super Smash Brothers Brawl: 92.84%
Super Smash Brothers Wii U: 92.39%

And I personally like Smash Wii U WAY more than Brawl, though that's admittedly anecdotal. The only reason I could see it being "shorter lived" than Brawl would be because of poor Wii U sales in general leading to a smaller online player base, but that has nothing to do with the quality of Smash Wii U itself.

And while Super Mario 3D World isn't as good as Galaxy 1/2, we're talking about quite possibly the 2 greatest 3D platformers of all time and the reviews certainly don't reflect a "big disappointment." It holds a 92.56% on Gamerankings. It's certainly a better Mario game than Sunshine, though they scored similarly.

What makes you believe this? It's sold over 3.6 million copies which is good for a game that launched on a single console with a relatively small user base. It also doesn't hurt that it's awesome.

I know these aren't your words specifically, but I don't understand the sentiment that Nintendo has lost their "magic." They still make amazing games. This didn't change with the Wii U. (I do wish they'd make a real Metroid game and another F-Zero, though.)

I was referring to a combination of anecdotes and reviews. For Smash, it's a lot of personal opinion combined with the fact that Melee is and will continue to be the preferred option to play.

I enjoyed 3D World decently, but I was disappointed with a 2.5D Mario that felt more like a port of 3D Land than an actual new game. Galaxy is one of my all time favorite games, and I struggle to give 3D World a 7/10.

As for Mario Maker, it was relatively popular, but it's high numbers are due to the heavy bundling that it received during the Splatoon boom that drove sales.

Fair enough. I just don't think Nintendo is going to be able to make the hardcore Melee crowd happy until they just remake it with online and improved graphics.

I just totally disagree here. I loved 3D Land and 3D World is full of even more original level designs and some fun cooperative / competitive gameplay. 3D Land is to 3D World as Galaxy 1 is to Galaxy 2. It's not as good as the Galaxy games but I don't know that Nintendo has released any games better than those 2 since then. To each their own, though. Sounds like it just wasn't your thing.

Maybe it's because my time is far more limited these days and I don't buy nearly as many games as I once did, but I don't see the Wii U as some colossal disappointment like many seem to. I've been happy with my [wife's] purchase. This probably also has something to do with a lot of my video game playing being with my 5 and 6 year olds. Nintendo games just hit the sweet spot of being fun for both kids and adults and I haven't been able to find that on PS4. I even tire of the well-reviewed, kid-targeted Lego games after about 20 minutes of playing them with my son but I lose track of time with Mario Kart 8, Smash Wii U, 3D World, and Yoshi's Woolly World.

To answer the original proposed question, though, I don't know whether this is hype-building marketing or just Nintendo's indecisiveness about what they actually want the NX to be. I also don't know that I'm a lock for getting one. We still don't even know what it is yet, the cost, and what games will be on it, save for Breath of the Wild, and my Wii U will be able to play that. They aren't about to lose me as a fan, though, even if they delay the NX to late 2017 or even 2018. I'll evaluate it like every other console they've released.

It's a rumor that all these people were called to Germany for a big announcement. Nintendolife was pushing it

I think it's bullshite but hey

I think at this point Nintendo plans to unveil it without warning on an unsuspecting market and let social media whip itself into frenzy.

That or it's not ready and is in line for a delay

Thank you for not making type anything out, Freau. As a diehard unwavering Nintendo fan boy I will buy the next console whenever the hell it comes out no matter what. And if it is some superpowered console/mobile hybrid like a merger of the wiiu and 3ds somehow where I can play full games on my TV at home and then just grab my mobile unit and walk out the door to play wherever, I will just hand Nintendo my bank account.

If it is the wildly featured mobile/console bybrid - I have 0 concerns about the success. If it's another underpowered console, I might be a little concerned.

Agreed.

Nintendo is popular with its fans specifically because it's Nintendo, nothing else can quell that want honestly.
