So the discussion isn't buried into a random thread created by Devious making fun of someone's SN and sic pirate monster... I decided to create this thread.

I'm currently working as a general CIS practitioner and also working on my CCNA so I can get into networking.

how far is everyone else along on it / been working in the field?

This may have been better suited for the tech board.

Certs are nice, but you better have the experience on your resume to support it. As long as that all jives, then you should be G/T/G

I got my CCNA after finishing school back in 2003. I was actually working on CCNP, but ended up letting the CCNA expire and never finished CCNP courses. I wouldn't mind doing it now, since we have all this cisco equipment at work. I wouldn't mind getting into it again, especially the IP phone system end of it.

I thought about it, but the Tech Board is a whole nother animal, and I'm not sure all the GB guys go to the tech board, and wanted to have a discussion with the Gaming guys. It fits, this used to be the "tech board" in a lot of ways before Chicken opened it up.

Nice.

LINK

I configured a pair of these today to replace some Ex 4550s we use for customer aggregation. We are a Juniper partner so we paid about half of that per switch.

Hoping to get some CCNP study time in tomorrow at work. Fridays are typically 'don't break anything' day so documentation and studying is encouraged

Taking a networking class now. Hoping to get Network+ at the end of the year. I don't understand a lot of this though.

Basically how I felt about it... They act like they know what they are doing, but I like the knowledge base here much more

I was originally going to work on my network+; but our phone/network guy (who also happens to be the guy that got a huge new job and is vacating the spot) told me to drop my network+ studying and start CCNA instead.

Definitely good advice. Go for CCNA by going for CCENT then CCNA. You split it up into two tests. The CCENT is about like the Network+, the bare basics.

I have literally no experience in this field and am just working on taking classes right now.

Classes are great, especially if they have a lab environment. Hands on experience is invaluable. I went to a vocational school and went through a Cisco CCNA Academy for four semesters.

My CCNA expired eons ago. I've been working in IT for 18 years now. Got a CEH certification a few years ago that is probably expired now too . Like others have said, hands on experience will serve you the best in this field.

I have my CCNP R/S and I have one exam left for my CCNP Wireless.

I haven't decided yet if I want to pursue my CCIE. I've ascended fairly high in my career without and I'm not sure it'd be worth the time investment.

I've been working in IT for about 12 years and strictly networking for about 8.
