Probably doesn't need a 4GB card. Is he only playing in 1080p?

If so, save some money and get him a 280 or 280x.

$165

It will max out any game currently out in 1080p.

What's the nvidia equivalent of that? I had a horrible time with an AMD build a couple years ago. Was a 2,000 dollar paperweight until I bought an Nvidia graphics card and core i5 processor.

The Nvidia equivalent is probably the 770 OP posted but it's going to be about double the money and just because you had issues doesn't mean anything. I had issues with Nvidia in the past. shite happens.

The 280 and 290 are the most bang for the buck on the market right now. Several people here have or have had them with no issues. I currently have a 290 and haven't had the first problem with it.

Probably best but again don't let him overspend on something he may never need. No game out there is going to need 4GB of GPU memory at 1080p.

With a few exceptions, I feel like most releases are optimized for Intel/Nvidia platforms. That wasn't always the case when I built my first desktop, but it seems that way now.

Your feelings would be wrong then.

It's about equal and the only real difference in a game optimized for Nvidia and not AMD would be PhysX.

Yep, this is where fanboyism comes from. Wrongness. I have the current "Flagship" NVIDIA cards and even I know they aren't the best bang for buck. Haven't even played through a physx-enabled game with them yet.

Nvidia does have a few other gimmicks, but they seem to be nearly exclusively in Ubisoft games right now... and well, lol.

What's bad about it is that it leads to people getting bad advice that might not know any better.

Ok Stout, I stand corrected, He already has it. Went to talk to him about it and he is putting it together as we speak. Let me show you a list of parts in this build. I thought we were going to get the jeep painted we this money but I guess not.

Looks good. That 970 will serve him well with that 144Hz monitor.

To be fair, my fanboyness came from a PC that had Crossfire AMD 5870s and an AMD Phenom X6 1090T processor. I had performance problems with the majority of games I played and every time I would update my drivers, I would get a BSOD unless I did a completely clean install.

your mileage my vary of course.

I upgraded to an Nvidia 580 and Intel Core i5 about 2 years ago. It's a little long in the tooth now, but it can still run almost any game at max settings. I've had performance issues in Dragon Age 2, BioShock Infinite and other games that run better on AMD hardware, but that list is a lot smaller than it was when I was on the other side of the fence, I can assure you.

Yea I had a 570 over two years ago and it was struggling back then. Couldn't imagine a 580 now.

Hey, that's actually a pretty solid part list.

I would like to know what games you are playing and if 60+ FPS is a requirement for you to "run a game."

2014 has been the first year where I've felt like it's time to start thinking about upgrading. Honestly, I could probably hold off another year unless there's a next gen title I'd really prefer to play on PC.
