Do any of you console gamers play through a monitor as opposed to your TV?

I have to upgrade my computer monitor and was thinking about killing two birds with one stone by getting a monitor I can play FPS type games on.

I'm looking at a 27" but could go lower and integrated speakers would be a nice option because I haven't pulled the trigger on a gaming headset for the XB1 yet. Also would running the HDMI switcher (I'd still want to be able to have the XB1 play through my 50" TV for tv/movies) reduce the response time advantage I gain by using the monitor?

I run my PC and PS4 through a splitter into my monitor and it has worked great. Once you play on a monitor, it is hard to go back to a tv even though I miss the couch sometimes.

Plug your PC into the HDMI in on the X1.

That would be

I recommend the ASUS VG248QE wholeheartedly. I have two of them, and I use them for both PC and console gaming, watching movies, and everything else. I'm a software engineer, and I game a good bit so I'm in front of these bad boys all day. After 8 months of having them, I don't know if there's another monitor (outside of a top end 4K monitor) I'd ever choose over it at this point. It's an amazing monitor. In fact, it's the monitor NVidia chose as the monitor it would use to test and roll out its experimental G-Sync technology because of it's awesome reputation and high level of performance.

It's only 24" so it's a little smaller than you'd like, but the specs on it are pretty awesome. 144Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, 80,000,000:1 Smart Contrast Ratio, 3D-enabled (with an add on package you can buy later), external speakers, some weird "gamer" features that someone who plays FPS would probably enjoy (like built-in crosshairs for when you're playing with iron sights and a game timer built in, not sure who actually uses it but it's there), and a pretty awesome stand. You can adjust the height and tilt a ton, and the monitor actually turn 90 degree for Portrait orientation. Because I program constantly, this was a big thing for me on top of the rest of the awesome features, but it may not do anything for you.

For what you're looking for, it's the best option. Integrated speakers and an ultra low response time are both perfect for you. Not to mention, it's just a gorgeous monitor. I'm actually planning on buying a third later this year.

I actually ended up going with this:
BenQ RL2455HM 24"

It was on every top console monitor list. It strips away some of the features consoles can't take advantage of as compared to PCs. It has the 1 ms response time as well. This is the monitor that MLG uses at their events.

No doubt. Just haven't pulled the trigger on a headset yet. That will happen any day now.

benQ is awesome, i have the XL2420TE, and can't FPS without it.

I also run a splitter and play madden/diablo/watch tv on my tv, FPS game on the monitor. I can't notice any sort of extra lag because of it.

ETA: replied to the wrong guy.
