I read most of that article, and quite simply put, I disagree with him. Adding Jedi didn't tank the subscription numbers, and using it as a cop out for future design choices that were just shitty choices and blatant disregard for the community is cheap and actually borderline rage inducing.

The CU did an overhaul of the game itself, not just Jedi, and it killed a small chunk of the sub base. Jedi was already around way before this I.e. when the game was highly successful.

Then the NGE came as a panic response to WoW. They made Jedi a class you could just play as from the get go which was an insult to the community when Jedi was something you had to work for.

Both the CU and NGE was told to the devs by the dedicated community that they were not good overall. They did it anyway, and they killed the game because of it. The CU and NGE did not come out of Jedi existing in the game, and to say otherwise is just false.

Edit: Based on my last paragraph, you can also interpret that those of us who played Pre-CU SWG and even CU SWG take anything a dev on that team says with a heavy grain of salt. They simply had to listen to the community, and they would've been fine. Instead, they basically told us our opinions didn't matter.

The community is what made this game special and why it still stays special to so many people that played it early on.

I think this is true for all the early MMOs except maybe Ultima, people that played them came from MUDs, pencil a paper, or board games. The monthly fee was an additional barrier to keep out people "looking for a game to play" who weren't interested in the setting of the game. Games then were also designed around needing a guild or group and your reputation was your game.

The whole Rip Hunter storyline in which you have to work with Captain Cold, Heat Wave, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, and Ray Palmer is pretty close.

Yeah, that one was a nice tie-in and it was around that time when we got the BvS tie-ins. After that though, nada. No Suicide Squad, not even a TV skin of GA nor Flash for Legends. Will be interesting to see if/how they try to tie in with the JL and/or WW movies.

I've played plenty but Dark Age of Camelot was leagues ahead of everything else for me. The PVP was amazing and there was plenty of shite talking on the forums.
Here's a video of my old guild Meiva on Hib/Guin for any oldtimers that might be interested.

The shite talking on the IGN server specific boards was soooo good.

Agreed - there's a reason that, even to this day, there are fan-funded servers running pre-CU and pre-NGE versions of Galaxies.

I play on Basilisk on the SWGEMU. Their goal is to mimic 14.1 which was the last patch prior to the combat upgrade.

Never played SWG. How hard is it for me to start - I see I have to find some installation discs? And also, is the server population healthy?

14.1 is indeed the goal. Word has also gone around that when SunCrusher comes around, they're not against the idea of adding more content I.e. stuff that wasn't bad about the CU and NGE. Will be interesting to see how that goes.

Also, iirc, you helped me out a bit early in my time on Basilisk. Curios, right? If I never said it before, thanks. The community drives that game in an amazing way.

Aye. Curios is my smith. I just log in now to mine mostly. I'll get back into it as more content is added.

Glad I could help!

To get it running, you need discs or... Ummm, another method if you catch my drift, but don't mention it in public chat. The devs don't support backdoor methods and will ban accordingly. Otherwise, any of the base game discs work fine.

I got a set of discs off Amazon iirc, and didn't have a problem. It can be a bit pricey however.

As for being a new player, I STRONGLY encourage you to read guides on the SWGemu forums. There is a LOT of stuff to this game. I'm a vet, and I've been playing again for a while. I still feel like I learn something new regularly on that game.

Over 1000 players online at a given time on average. Publish 9 (the next incoming publish) is supposed to contain Jedi, so population will likely increase significantly.

I look forward to seeing you around then! Pub 9 seems to be near as well. Last time I checked the progress on it, it was 93.75% iirc.

Understood.

Well you've sold me. My go to UO freeshard is pretty much dead and I am bummed about that even though I hadn't been on regularly in a while. Going to find some discs and jump on.

I always feel like I missed the boat entirely on this and this game came out in my gaming hayday while attending LSU.

Awesome! I'm currently running 4 chars with 1 main of course. Kodaf (main), Ecks-Box, Zacchaeus, and Jexif. Feel free to add them and hit me up in game. I'll be glad to try and help you get going. It can be overwhelming at first, so don't be surprised if it is. If it isn't, then fantastic for you

Looking forward to Pantheon(best looking game that looks like EQ)

I just checked this out earlier today after only hearing about it from your post. I'm typically one who tries to avoid the hype train when it comes to new games, but holy shite this game sounds like exactly what I want. I really hope they can back up the talk.

I was a Tallon Zek and later Sullon Zek player in old EQ...curious, were you around for the oldschool BoTB tournaments? There were no zerkers back then, so figured it may have been a little before your time.
