Watch Scott Manley on YouTube. He was the one that helped me learn some of the basics. Even after watching his videos you'll still have a lot of trial and error.
It's a game with a very steep learning curve but once you get the basics down, it is one of the most addicting games ever. I remember not being able to land on the Mun to save my life. Once I finally figured that out, the whole game just opens up. Building bases and flying to other planets is just a blast.
I have a few kerbals who ran out of fuel and have been stuck in orbit over Jool for about 20 kerbal years now and there's no rescue mission in site.

This is one of the games that I recommend cheating if you aren't having fun. It's not fun in the beginning and if you give up, you are missing out on a great game.
Find mods like MechJeb and use the cheat menu to get unlimited RCS and fuel. Learn the game and you will become better where you don't need to use the cheats or mods.
The steep learning curve sucks, but the payoff is awesome.
