Just finished new doom game, it was great, but Doom 3 was the real masterpiece

The new game excelled at bringing back classic style in every way possible, and the weapons upgrades along with collectible/secret hunting added great depth. It's a game worthy of all the 9.5/10 reviews it gets.
But doom 3, in my view, wasn't passed by by this game. For a few big reasons. One of them simply being that doom 3 was a stunning gaming achievement and one of the best horror games of all time. And yes, I know the games are completely different in style and gameplay, but here goes my analysis. I'm ready for downvotes.
Plot: Doom 3 is brothers karamazov and doom 4 is a hardy boys-level plot, and that's being generous. Doom 3's scenario/story was what made you continue to want to play it. It was deep, it was detailed, it was riddled with mystery and secrets that only advancing through would solve. It had survivors (human survivors), it had subplots and the PDA's gave you many sidestories, some even humorous.
Doom 3 is scary and chilling, doom 4 is not. One of doom 3's transcending moments was when you were in the delta labs and you took that wrong turn, and all the sudden you see bloody footsteps but no person there, and you hear that voice "they took my baby". That's gaming brilliance. Nothing of the sort in the new one.
As another review brought up:
All in all, I loved and enjoyed the Doom 4. It's a solid A game. - it is just that I find it clearly not as good as the previous one. Doom 4 has the gadgets, the gizmos, the climbing, the glory kills- doom 3 has the purpose, the awe, the mystery, the real chainsaw, and all the components of a great unfolding of a great plot.

Doom 3 has a great ambient (sounds, lightning, nicely scripted events), Doom 4's sounds are average to awful, and it uses a minimum of scripted events.
Doom 3's Hell level really looks dark, gloomy and terrific, Doom 4's Hell level looks way too common and almost quiet actually - this is clearly not hell as the place where all evil resides.

Two totally different games that should be viewed based on their design objectives—one shot for atmosphere and palpable tension, and the other sought after excellent combat mechanics and brutal, unending action. Two totally different approaches between the games, but both excelled in what they were setting out to do.
Not sure if you read a lot of the Codex stuff from the new Doom, but the backstories were amazing. Samuel Hayden was a very interesting character.

The new Doom has way better gameplay. The series has never felt as tight and fluid as it does now,but you're right the story could have been better.
I just don't get into Doom for the story.

The new game is much better than Doom 3.

It's the best pure shooter in years. And there's a pretty awesome story there if you dig a little.

The story was addressed in the beginning where you're basically just a space marine who wants to shoot shite

What made the new Doom so awesome is the feeling that you are worse than the demons. They are scared shitless of you. You are worse than evil, and you have nothing to fear from any of these guys because they don't have a chance.
