Is buying a used n64 worth it?
Posted by Byrdybyrd05 online on 5/18/17 at 10:23 am
My son played Mario kart on n64 for the first time at my cousin's house and now he wants one so he can play it at the house. I hate to spend money on something old for one game but if I do get it I'm going to get goldeneye 007 so I can play my favorite game as a kid on it. I'm just worried about buying one and the n64 console doesn't last long and I lose money on it. Anybody had any experience with them lately?

Big helpful question is how much are you going to pay for it?

A lot of them I see for sale are $70-$90 with a couple of games with them.

Way overpriced. I wouldn't pay more than $45-50 for the console, all cables, and a controller.

Craiglist?
LINK
This is in the area I live, but some pawn shops and game specific stores should carry them a lot cheaper.
And if you can get it for that price, I'd go for it and I'm sure we could recommend some great additional games to go with it.

Do you have a Switch or or Wii U? I would think those games are available in the virtual shop. Or you could just get the newest Mario Kart on the Switch or whatever system you have.

Most older cartridge based systems like the N64 hold up really well/ That being said your son would probable like some of the newer Kart games as well .

Finding a controller with a working analog stick is the trickier thing.

N64s aren't that expensive. Maybe 40-60 dollars for the console itself. Might can find one cheaper at a local video game store or through Craig's List as opposed to Ebay.

No way. Just buy a Raspberry Pi and set that up instead. Way better use of cash.

There are new 3rd party controllers still being sold on Amazon. I'm not sure of the quality though.

I didn't know which was a better buy. Either the original or buy the refurbished one?

Yup. Better yet, if you already have a laptop or computer, use that with an emulator.

A little kid isn't going to want to play Mario Kart 64 on a computer.
He's going to want to play it on the TV just like at his friend's house.

You may pay more for some games on 64 than the console itself

No shite sherlock. It's still not the same as playing it on the actual console w/proper controllers ya cheap arse entitled twat.

The stick can be refurbished, but make sure it's an original controller, not a third party one. Also, find a $20-30 Sony CRT to play it on. Without an upscaler, retro games look like shite on modern tvs. Modern tvs shite the bed when it comes to 240p and 480i signals.
