I think I'm finally starting to get what the fuss over dark souls was

Just started playing the other day, and I'll be honest, I've been scared to play this game for awhile after reading this board. I bought it early this year and it's been at the top of my backlog but I kept slipping other games ahead of it.

Do y'all have any tips for me?

I'm only just past the Taurus demon and now going under the bridge, but the black knight at the top of the tower keeps kicking my arse. Also, I lucked out of beating the Taurus demon because he whacked me off the bridge and then jumped after me, I got "you died" followed by "you defeated." Did I miss a nice drop?

TIA

A decent haul of souls, but you should be able to go back and retrieve them.

What kind of build are you going for?

Went with warrior for first play through.

How would I go back to get the souls? Wasn't really an indication that I got some at the bonfire.

You should be able to go back to the bridge where you died fighting the Taurus Demon and pick your souls up.

If you're a warrior, then you start out with decent stats in STR; you can pick up the Claymore on the bridge with the red dragon -- do a suicide run to get it, it's one of the best weapons in the game. You can also get the Zweihander from the graveyard.

Complete the rest of undead burg, defeat the gargoyles and go to the depths and get the large ember to upgrade your weapon to +5.

Yeah its amazing

Don't slow yourself down with too much armor.

go for back stabs

Find what you like and what comes easy and enhance that

Upgrade your favorite weapons at blacksmiths

Beating the Taurus demon is good fun. Congrats. But rest assured..you gon git rekt often and repeatedly.

I still remember trudging though that level as a noob...felt so accomplished beating it. Soon I realized that was by far the easiest level...

You didn't miss anything worthwhile. Any weapon can beat the game. Those black knight bad assess are optional. So is the red drake. The giant boar you are about to meet is not.

Farm exp in that big forest. Just get the knight and ghosts to fall off the cliff and you will get some high levels.

Unless you died again before retrieving your souls. Which, let's be honest, you likely did.

Nah I felt like a cheapass winning the fight like that. I did puff my chest out a bit when I went toe to toe with the first black knight and won. I'm sure that was premature though

Gear and strategy > stats and levels

People beat the game as level 1.

Nah frick that. You won. He's on a bridge and fell off. It happens. Gravity always wins in dark souls. Use the environment to your advantage.

Yep, upgrading weapons is more important than stats. Level your dex and STR to match the stats of the weapon you like: don't go haywire leveling up. It really doesn't matter whether you're level 100 or 500.

THe Taurus Demon is pretty easy once you learn the key strategy. Just remember there's always a trick to killing a lot of the enemies, especially bosses.

Good luck
Buy an extra controller
Prepare to die, a lot
It's one of my favorite games of all time.

This is the only game that I never felt what I did to win was cheap. You do whatever you have to do to defeat an enemy. Anything goes.

Tips:
Don't use a walkthrough. Try and figure it out on your own. This is probably the most rewarding game I've ever played.
Take it slow. Rushing will only work when you really know an area
Use your shield!
Learn to parry to expand upon the last point.
Magic is the best thing in the game by far - trust me on this.
If an area is too hard, you may be in the wrong place.

Tip if you're stuck: You're going to get raped about 1000x over in some areas. Learn the pattern of the enemies. Figure out their attack set. They all have a standard set of moves. When you can predict what they're about to do, then an area becomes a cake walk. Backstabs are the way to go.

Is that claymore just laying on the bridge somewhere? And I guess I should use up what souls I have and go get it and dont worry about retrieving whatever I lose on the bridge?

I haven't figured out how to upgrade gear yet.

You will meet a blacksmith sorta soon. For the love of god do not kill or attack him.

The claymore is at the end of the bridge under the dragon. Yeah it's lying there.

Have fun with the bell tower gargoyles.

I just finished my third playthrough and that was only boss I died on.

Just boss mind you, I died plenty of times just cruising through the world.

Just get used to the idea of having no armor. Keep your equipment load below 25%. You can react faster, roll farther, and just generally fight better.

Armor looks cool, but if you're too heavy its just more trouble than its worth.
