I am going to be buying a wireless printer. If I just plug that fricker in will the pc be able to print? Or do I have to have it connected to a "host" pc and then can print from the laptop. I'm old and confused.

You'll need to install the printer (drivers) on any machine you want to print from...so just pop the software CD/DVD in to the computer(s) and connect to it. It really shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes or so I'd imagine.

*edit*

I'm assuming there will also be some sort of setup that needs to be done to get the printer hooked to your network. It may be done from the printer or with the software provided, not really sure on that part since all of them are kind of different.

This is the scenario. This is in a dorm room. There will only be 2 laptops. Daughter and her roommate. There won't be a network, since it's just their 2 laptops. I want to stick a printer in there and have them both wirelessly print to it.

Which printer are you looking at? Not all of them support direct wireless printing. Most of them connect to a router wirelessly.

For $40. Just get two of them. Will be much easier.

This is not possible without some wizardry that I don't think exists.

Even if the printer was hooked up to one it couldn't be shared out to the other without being on a network. Honestly, the best bet is going to be to have a USB cable that can be plugged in to whichever laptop needs to print at that moment.

Did the same this past weekend. It's very simple. You can connect to your pc with a usb cable during setup or attempt to connect it wirelessly during setup.

Sure it's possible. That's why I asked what printer he was looking at.

HP wireless direct is a new feature that allows your Wi-Fi capable devices (for example: smart phones, tablets, or computers) to make a wireless network connection directly to your printer without using a wireless router or access point. You connect to your printer’s HP wireless direct signal the same way you connect your Wi-Fi capable device to a new wireless network or hotspot.

From a computer, smart phone or tablet, being connected to the HP wireless direct connection looks the same as being connected to a typical network to which the HP printer is already connected. A print application (for smart phones and tablets) or printer software (for a computer) must be installed in order to use the printer over the HP wireless direct connection.

All printer functions will be available, with the exception of photo uploads and memory card access, via a mapped drive. Some printers have implemented HP wireless direct with two modes: “Print only” and “Open”. If “Print Only” mode is selected, only the print function will be available. If “Open” mode is selected, all of the printer features will be available, with exception of photo uploads and memory card access, via a mapped drive.

Some important things to know about HP wireless direct:

- The HP wireless direct connection supports up to five clients at the same time.

- You can turn HP wireless direct on and off from the HP wireless direct menu on the printer display. HP wireless direct is turned off by default. You can also check the HP wireless direct name or password—if you chose to enable HP wireless direct with security—from the HP wireless direct menu. The HP wireless direct network name will have the format “HP-Print-**-<printer model>”. The “**” characters are a placeholder to represent two characters used to uniquely identify your printer, and <printer model> will be the model of your printer.

- If you turn HP wireless direct on with security (available on some printers), an 8-digit WPA2 password will be automatically generated. In order to connect, the Wi-Fi-capable device must also support WPA2 encryption. This password can be accessed on the printer display at any time after you turn this feature on.

- HP wireless direct is available even if the printer is also connected to a network or by a USB cable.

For the money, he is better off buying two $40 printers and not having to potentially deal with wireless headaches

That's pretty awesome. Apparently there is some wizardry that allows it that I didn't know about

I don't recall any wireless headaches, but since we're talking about women and computers, I guess it's easy to underestimate what can go wrong.

You might want to hold off on getting the router. If this is on a campus, in a dorm room, then they may have restrictions on students hooking up personal routers; I know the university I work for does.

If they have wireless, and can get online in their room, all they really need to do is register the MAC address of the printer on the network, and it should be easy from there.

Is it a gaming printer or regular printer?
