You can turn gold and basically be invincible if you get all the rings in those tunnels. I did it once. It was pretty cool.

When I was in college, I watched a friend of mine beat Sonic 3 and collect all the Chaos Emeralds in like 45 minutes. It wasn't a speedrun or anything.
