Not true at all.
Really the only grind after getting to lvl 40 is getting up close to 290 to start the raid. After that you're pretty much ready for end-game content including Trials and the Normal mode raid.
It probably took me a week.
By the way, I'm sure you could find someone to play with you through everything since Bungie introduced the Refer-a-Friend and people are selling their souls to try and get the new Sparrow
