This topic is being discussed on an IGN podcast and I found it interesting.

For me Kotor 1 and 2 dominated my summer in college and helped me through a bunch of girl problems. I was pretty depressed but playing that game all summer is basically my only good memory of it. i also had a friend die in college and FFX helped me through that too, I put a lot of hours at that time into it.

I moved around a lot from ages 5-14 so games gave me something to do until I made friends wherever I was.

I took out a lot of frustrations on innocent bystanders in San Andreas.

Until didn't start gaming until I had my own business, 3 cars and a sick house. So I don't have any hard times games.

During Katrina, we evacuated to my Aunt and Uncle's house. I brought my PS2 with me and played 5 seasons of dynasty on NCAA football in 5 days

I can't say they have gotten me through really tough times, because I guess I haven't seen any really tough times. They have however just helped with all around shitty days, where I want to forget for a few hours what happened that day.

Yes....yes it does.

The game is so immersive, it is easy to forget what is going on around you.

I am enjoying the 2nd play through, it is going a lot faster too. Even though I jumped up to hard early on it is easier since I have a better feel for how to play. I spent 2 hours int he subway area with the safe guarded by a runner the first time. i never could get to that safe. This time I got into the safe and passed that area in about 5 minutes.

without going into too much detail, the short answer is yes. I've had to deal with some stuff growing up, and as a young adult that sucked major arse, but I definitely found comfort in videogames. ESPECIALLY when you can jump online and game with some of your closest friends IRL. The game itself takes you away from the reality of the issues around you, while also having your friends there to listen if you need someone to talk to. Very therapuedic (sp?)

I have also seen video games cause divorces as well, so it's always important to find that happy medium.

My life is pretty hectic right now in college. I think gaming helps reduce a lot of stress. They are a good distraction from the depression caused by not having a SO too .......

I think games are like anything, if you let it consume you then you will have problems. It's similar to workaholics. Some people put in overtime and work harder during hard times which I understand. However if you let it consume you and have no balance in your life then you are doing more harm than good.
