Are the mechanical keyboards worth the money? Pros?

Depends on what you get. You don't have to get a "gaming keyboard" to have a mechanical keyboard, and vice versa.

I guess I was just looking for an upgrade from my stock basic keyboard and mouse.
Any suggestions?

Whats your price range?

It really depends on what you want to spend and want out of it. Mechanical keyboards last longer and feel much different from membrane keyboards. Lots of options out there for various budgets. If you aren't sure if you like the feel of mechanical or don't know what switch to get, they make switch samples so you can feel and hear the difference that cost like $10.

Ive used two $10 wal mart keyboards over the past 10 years. I only bought the 2nd because i spilled tea all over the first. probably 10K hours on them combined.
two mice in the same period. one had 4 buttons. this one has 12. $70 for both.

Get a Razor mouse. You will love it.

Personally I would highly recommend a mechanical keyboard for general feel of typing beyond any game related issues.
Some people don't like them, but they feel much better to me.

Mouse, not so much. I just like to ensure it's capable of the DPI I desire (pretty much any new mouse meets this standard of mine). Grip style (claw or palm) i use palm, so will this mouse be comfortable for me. Programmable buttons, I like to have at least 2.
Personally I love the products razor brings to the table for a mouse. However, they tend to be a little small for my hand so I'v always went to Logitech g500s. Currently I have the G502
Keyboards IMHO it's definitely worth it to go mechanical. Not only for games, but typing as well.
I'v never been a huge fan of the "gaming" labeled products because they tend to be tacky. I like sleek/simple.
So with that in mind I have the Ducky Channel Shine 5.
Rather expensive for a mechanical keyboard, but out of the 3 I'v owned I have enjoyed this one the most.

I'm left handed, so I ordered the left-handed Corsair Scimitar.
It takes a bit of getting used to, especially using the numeric key pad on the side.
Keyboard I use is the Corsair K95.
Of the two devices, if I only had to choose one as a necessity, I'd take the mouse. The keypad is invaluable, once you get used to it.
BestBuy links to items mentioned.

ETA - the feel of the mechanical keyboard over the $20 Office Max keyboard is night and day. You'll feel a difference.
One of the cool things on the Corsair keyboard is the ability to hi-lite keys that are used regularly versus non used keys.
If I'm gaming at night, the only lights on are from the monitor. The hi-lighted hot keys are nice. But that's not reason enough to drop $200. Its the programmability of the keyboard coupled with the key hi-lighting that sets it apart.
