I just built a PC made primarily for video editing (aka: Gaming PC) and I'm thinking.... what the hell.... I'll try a few games. Bear in mind the last time I played a video game was Dungeons and Dragons.

Hoping someone could recommend a few games to break in with. Really would like to steer clear of pillage, burn and shoot 'em up games.

Aviation games would be of particular interest along with main-line sports, or anything else that might appeal to a 60+ guy. Games that keep you mentally sharp would be great too.

I have 4 grand kids, ages 3-7, so maybe a game or two for them too.

Also, any recs on peripherals (joy sticks, mice etc) and places to buy them online would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

Well shite. I'm out.

Maybe try some of the RTS (real time strategy) games. Age of Empires 2 maybe.

You build cities, manage resource production, build armies, etc.

Maybe Civilization 5 or Sim City.

I have no idea about aviation games and I don't really play sports games so can't help you there.

My dad is in his early 60s and likes RTS games. He was a fan of this obscure one called Krush Kill and Destroy (doesn't really fit with your "no pillage, burn, and shoot" preference though). Also pretty dated.

Portal and Portal 2 are good.

Hmm... Damn, video games are violent. It's actually tough to think of any where the goal isn't to kill an enemy in some form.

There's Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Dishonored, two great games that you allow for a completely non-lethal approach. (i.e., tranquilizer dart rifles, sneaking, and stealth knock-outs) But they aren't "kid-friendly."

Doubt he would go for those. Even non-lethal, they are still pretty violent.

I think I'll cut my teeth on a Microsoft Flight Simulator and go from there. Back in the day, I was IFR/Multi-engine rated so maybe I can shake some rust off.

Chime is a fun music/puzzle
Braid is a great puzzle
Machinarium is one of the best adventure games around.
Roller coaster Tycoon (any of them) is a blast.
The Sims
Terraria
Minecraft

Aviation games:
Wings of Prey
IL-2 Sturmovik is incredible
Tom Clancy's HAWX for a much faster paced air combat game
Microsoft Flight Simulator, extremely robust interface.

Take a look at DCS world. It is a VERY detailed flight sim.

You actually would probably also enjoy Kerbal Space Program. While it looks a bit goofy with the little green guys who are your "astronauts" it is a very cool rocket building game where you build rockets and try to land on other planets etc.

Kerbal Space Program

You can build your own space rockets and planes. It's fairly complex but once you figure it out it's a ton of fun. It's also a great way to get your kids interested in physics.

I second machinarium. I'm loving it

When you say games to keep your mind sharp i think puzzles. Portal/portal 2. The bridge. Anti chamber. Braid. The cave is a fun one,..not terribly hard but just enough puzzle aspect with great narration to keep it funny

Grand kids... I havent played but id bet goat simulator is a blast for 3-7 range. Videos look totally ridiculous and funny.

I'll put in a second vote for Kerbal Space Program

Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord, is a really good turn based WWII strategy/sim game

Battle Over Britain
And
IL2 Sturmovik are some excellent WWII flight simulators
