I don't think anything will ever be able to top it.
I was a dumb kid, most of what we have now didn't exist yet or my house didn't have it, i.e. cellphone, personal computer, HD graphics, flat screen TVs, 3d gaming.
Most importantly, I didn't have message boards or constant bombardment of advertising, so I knew very little about the game before I played it. No game trailers, no YouTube game play videos, etc...
That game blew my fricking mind when I was a kid. Riding a horse through an open 3D world, the first time you went from kid to adult link, finding out Sheik was in fact Zelda, I'm too old and cynical for something to have an impact on my life like that now.
Unless of course full immersion Tron style gaming comes out where you actually go into a virtual reality world.
