This is why I went the hipster route. I can't narrow it down.

The fact that it took numerous posts for someone to say Mario or Legend of Zelda makes me lose faith in humanity.

My hipster route:

One of the greatest games never heard of by anyone I know:

And a surprisingly awesome major property game that was incredible on the NES and hard as crap:

And come on, Louisiana:

Eh, someone's going to say them, move on to the more debated stuff, because...

Super Mario 3
Mario Brothers
Duck Hunt
LotZ 1 and 2
Metroid
Hogan's Alley

are all givens.

Bayou Billy is really, really hard. And not in a good way. I tried to play it and it took me probably 5 game overs and an hour to beat the first level. Then I watched the speedrun, and the freaking world expert died a few times playing it. That game is HARD.

No, I was going to list my favorite games. I would say the three Mario Games, Zelda, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man, TMNT.... but I can't include them without Punch-Out, Star Tropics, Metroid, Super Dodgeball. What about Tetris? Dig-Dug? I would be here all day, hundreds of games I like for the NES... literally.

Didn't see the TMNT games listed.

But MM2 was probably my favorite from NES.

One of the hardest.

But the music was awesome and the graphics were pretty good for Nintendo.

The Japanese version is apparently easier. Back in the 80s, renting games was illegal in Japan (might still be, idk). In America, there were a bunch of Nintendo nerds who would just rent a game and play it all day, beat it and return it. To get around this, they started making the American releases insanely difficult, to where just outright buying a game was the better option if you wanted to actually beat it.

Rygar is a very underrated game.

My top five:

Tecmo Super Bowl
RBI Baseball
Mike Tyson's Punchout
Super Mario Bros 3
Metroid

with Baseball Stars and Castlevania barely missing the cut.

Never had a problem with this. Most games, even RPGS, I could rent a few periods, and finish. Way cheaper than purchase.

I could never post one, so I will make a short list.

TMNT
Fester's Quest
Bionic Commando
SM Bros 3
Master Blaster
Double Dragon
Castelvania

Now, did you mean original as in it was made for the NES or that the NES was the first system to adapt an arcade game to their system?
