Ok, bought it today, and it's my first game in the series. I know it's similar to the TES games, in that you have to do step and fetch quests.
But, can i just roam around and grind? Are there stuff to find that arent party of side quests n such?
Played a little earlier and loved beating the shite out of things with a baton. But it looks like you really need to upgrade guns and such
Last thing, Any good Xbone mods i should look at, if i start a new game?
Also, i noticed people being able to get wood, and scrap metal, does that come with exp? i couldnt grab scrap metal, only scrap it at the machine.

Yes you can search random buildings just for the hell of it if you want. There are plenty of repeating quests that take you to random places so you might as well do those and get some experience with your exploration. There are a ton of side quests and four different faction storyline quests so between all that there's almost no point to randomly explore since you'll cover most locations through some quests anyway.

Whenever you're out there freeroaming at low levels, make sure you don't wander too far around the map, because in certain areas the bad guys and gals will be a higher level (red skull by name) than you and will whip your arse pretty good.

I love free roaming in Fallout 4, but you need to be at a higher level. Start off with the main quest and eventually it will make you visit the other side of the map. That's when you can free roam.
Pick one type of gun to use. Rifle, Pistol, Automatic..etc.. And use your perk points to level up that specific type gun.
If you get your Agility to 9 and take the Blitz perk, it works great combined with big leagues.
Building settlements is useless. Don't waste your time unless its part of the main storyline.

I died A LOT when I first started 4, more than I remember with 3 and NV. It's definitely challenging at first.
Save up your caps and buy the Overseer's Guardian from Vault 81 and you'll have your "walking stick" to go wander and loot at your leisure.

You can add armor on top of your vault suit (and certain other types of clothes like road leathers). I hadn't played any of the other Fallouts, so I made the mistake of running around in Cage Armor for way too long.
Pick up everything and store it in your workshop. At one point I ran out of ceramic to upgrade my power armor because I didn't pick up enough dirty ashtrays along the way.
If you decide to do settlements, you can arm your settlers with better guns as you go along. They only need one bullet in their inventory that matches the gun type. Eventually when the settlement is attacked, your settlers shred the attackers before you fire more than a shot or two.

After your first play-through, start another on survival mode. You've probably never played a game as challenging as that.

Building settlements is one of the easiest ways to level in the game, it's hardly useless.

It's also fun as hell. I don't know about y'all but I can sit there for hours and build settlements.

I think on it's own it might be enjoyable. It's just when I'm doing other Fallout stuff...........I'd rather be doing that stuff. It's cool that it's there and I know people enjoy it, but I feel I would have to dedicate an entire playthough to settlements if I was going to get into it.

That's how I'm playing through it right now. I'm doing survival and since it's ridiculously hard to get across the map without dying before a save, I'm building the settlements with supply lines to have savepoints. I'm like a level 30 right now with barely any quests done so it'll help make the quests a bit easier when I go to do them.

I can't tell you how many hours I spent building settlements, but I eventually burned out on it. Yea, its fun and it definitely gets the creative juices flowing, I just got tired of spending a lot of time collecting and hauling around junk. Now I spend more time building my own base, no settlers, just me and dogmeat.

I enjoyed building settlements a lot more than I thought I would. I've watched some videos on it now and some people really get into it. There's some amazing looking settlements out there.

I've tried to give the settlements a go here and there, but I swear there's usually a broken down warehouse crawling with super mutants somewhere across the commonwealth shaking it's keys in the air, I lose focus, and I'm out.

Once you connect them with supply lines it makes it much easier than trying to find junk because the junk is shared.

Supply lines actually lowers your happiness level. You can get the 100% happiness trophy with two settlers though so its not a big deal.

I had no idea. Mods disable the trophies anyway though so it's all good.
