Fallout 3 vs. Fallout New Vegas

I was wondering which of the two is a better game and what is different about each. I am a huge fan of Skyrim and was wanting to get into Fallout. Both seem to have good reviews.

I thought that Fallout 3 had a more cohesive story to move you along and it was fun to romp around post-apocalyptic DC. That being said I really liked the open nature of New Vegas as well as the divergent story options.

Thanks for the info. I might just get both.

Did they ever patch the 9 million bugs in Vegas?

You can get the GOTY edition of both for about $20 each. Do that. I prefer New Vegas but they're both great.

If you do that, grab the GOTY versions of both and play them in the order of 1. FO3 2. NV - there are some game engine upgrades in NV that might make it harder to go the opposite order.

New Vegas is a good game, but Fallout 3 is one of the best games I've ever played. Perfectly captures the atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Also has some great tongue in cheek humor. Definitely get the DLCs (they extend the game and raise the level cap).
New Vegas is a bit lighter in tone, but there's more to do and more options in the direction you want to take the story. I didn't think the DLCs were as good.
Can't go wrong with either one. I spent well over 100 hours on each. They're both cheap enough now you could buy both without spending much.

NV was done by Obsidian.
And 3's main story is 12 minutes long.

You can do a speed run of just the main story quests in NV in about 3 hours. I've gone through the whole game beginning to end in 3 1/2 hours before but only because I didn't get a certain item drop.

You can do the same with Oblivion and Skyrim ~2 hrs each.
I readthat speed runs of F3 were being done in just over an hour.

I only did it for the hardcore achievement. It wasn't really fun that way.

3's main story completely ruined the game for me. It was just a terrible story for the sequel to two of the best classic rpgs.

New Vegas felt like a Fallout sequel.

I really enjoyed Fallout 3, but never picked up New Vegas due to the bug issues I kept hearing about from buddies of mine.
How significant were the bugs?

The game would freeze every once in a while or get stuck in a loading screen and you would have to turn off the xbox and turn it back on to get out of it. You couldn't dashboard out. Its pretty annoying but didn't happen often enough to me to be a huge problem.

Fallout 3 was so much better.
New Vegas was gamebreaking glitchy for me.

It was more word of mouth. It would lock up after 2-3 hours of play but that was it. I played at release and never encountered any quest bugs.

Mine was awful. After about 15 hours of gameplay, all the factions were reset for me. Even though I killed all the bombers I could find, they still were indifferent. My NCR Radio stopped working :/
