I recently moved to a rural area and was wondering if anyone had tried this for online gaming and what advice they would give

Unless you have a grandfathered unlimited plan it can get pricey I would think. I wouldn't try online multi player especially shooters, the lag would suck is my guess.

I haven't ever tried it so I reserve the right to be wrong.

Grandfathered unlimited plan 4G LTE is a must if you plan on playing often. The connection is okay, but expect lag spikes from time to time. Definitely playable.

My boys have been using their phones hotspot to play COD 3 on ps4 and haven't had any issues. When they first told me they were using it, I thought the lag would be terrible but, after watching a few matches, it looks pretty good. Usually, they only have 1 or 2 bars of LTE.

You will be at a distinct disadvantage on anything requiring twitch skills.

You may think it is playable, but you will often feel like "hey I shot you first bitch why am I dead?"

I raid pretty constantly on my mobile hotspot. Outside of a couple spikes here and the hotspot does well. Data usage isn't all that bad either depending on what kind of games and voice chat service you use.
