There were a million points of interest in Activision’s earnings call yesterday, chief among them that Blizzard is absolutely destroying everything in its path and leading to record revenue generation. But outside of that, there was one morsel of info that millions were dying to hear about:

What’s up with Destiny 2?

This week, I wrote a post where I expressed my skepticism about a few games that claim to be coming out in 2017, but it feels like they might get pushed, Crackdown, Red Dead and so on. But one game on the list, Destiny 2, had people freaking out more than most. But Activision and Bungie have both done their best to maintain that yes, Destiny 2 really is coming out in 2017. No, there’s no firm date and it’s still potentially 8-10 months away and things could change, but they emphatically say it’s part of their holiday line-up.

In the report, Activision said that development on Destiny 2 is “going great,” and that the game will have a “cinematic story and relatable characters,” as well as being accessible to new players, which in my mind, very much indicates a full reset, ie. not taking any gear with you.

But past what was officially announced about Destiny 2, well-known Destiny insider, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, had a bit of info to add. If Bungie does miss the fall 2017 release window, there will be consequences:

“If Bungie misses this year for Destiny 2, Activision is awarded a hefty chunk of the independent studio’s stock, according to two sources familiar with goings-on at Bungie,” he said. “Bungie employees’ stock vesting schedule is also based on game releases, including Destiny 2, which gives them major incentives to get the sequel out this year.”

quote:

The glass half full way of looking at things is that Bungie has had an extra year to polish Destiny 2, and with a ton of help on the project, it should be in good shape for 2017. The silence is reflective of them not wanting to show anything that ends up getting cut (which has happened a lot during past Destiny development), and that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to show.

The glass half empty perspective is that Bungie might be feeling undue pressure to cut corners and rapidly finish a game that simply is not ready, or else they suffer some pretty serious financial consequences and further strain their relationship with Activision. In theory, like we saw with Destiny 1, a lot could potentially be ripped out of the game or left for the future if there isn’t time to get it out before this deadline. Given the fractured state Destiny 1 released in, no one wants to see a repeat of that.

count me as a glass half empty person on this

Well for one their install base would be 1/3 of the size it is now.

So the game will suck at release and be playable around summer 2018.

Got it.

Try not to get your hopes up about this one guys.

What a great idea. It's not like Destiny was completely fricked due to being rushed out, let's force them to rush on 2!

Get ready for another thousand grimoire cards.

UPDATE (2/10, 4pm): Bungie has denied that this is the case, telling Kotaku: “There is no scenario where Activision, or any other partner we work with, is awarded Bungie stock.” This contradicts the account of two sources we spoke to prior to the publication of this story. It’s possible we got our wires crossed or were misinformed—we’re poking around to see what happened there—but we know that this information had been floating around both externally and internally at Bungie. We apologize for the confusion and will defer to Bungie’s account on this one.

However, we do know that Bungie employees’ stock vesting schedule is based on game releases, including Destiny 2, which gives them major incentives to get the sequel out this year.

LOL at anyone who falls for this scam. It'll be a glorified expansion pack and sell for 60 bucks

Because MS would not let them make Destiny. All MS wants is Halo after Halo after Halo after Halo and it is working out, "Oh so well for MS".

MS exclusives are garbage for the most part and now they have exclusives dropping like flies. Out of 8 games shown at E3 2014; only 1 has seen the light of day so far, almost 3 years later, and only 1 more ever will. How would things be better if Bungie would have stayed at MS? Best thing Bungie could have done was partnered directly with Sony.

It's a shame blizzard is hitting record revenues. All of their games are so poorly designed with the exception of maybe overwatch. Everything else is so basic and uninspired. It's like rewarding bad behavior.

For as good as the first one was, I hope this is false, very high expectations for #2.

Hopefully they implement some ranking/elo system and get it into the eSports world as well.

Yea I didn't get destiny till TTK was already out and it's an incredible game IMO but the last expansion was a massive letdown. Very brief PVE expansion and the PvP is shite at the moment. The taken king seemed like it was what we all want to see in an expansion. Im starting to recognize a lot of gamer tags that I've played against before which Makes me think the player base is low.

Hopefully destiny 2 doesn't get rushed out and doesn't let me down. I'll be buying it but I'm very skeptical. The first one has been a blast and I've spent more time on it than all my other games together twice over.
