A buddy and I were thinking about getting into the Dark Souls series but didn't really know anything about it. I've heard it's the hardest game I'll ever play but don't know anything about it. Should we have to play the games in order and could my buddy and I play together?

It's definitely not the hardest game ever made, and yes, you can co-op the game together.

If I can beat it, you can beat it.

The multiplayer systems are a bit wonky, but yes you can effectively play together.

The order isn't crazy important since the game's only have a loose connection in narrative.

The games are definitely difficult, but I think pretty much anyone can beat them.

Ok, I'm an idiot. I had no idea. How does this work?

You just coordinate a place to drop your sign, preferably somewhere somewhat obscure. Then take turns clearing the bosses in each other's games.

FWIW Dark Souls is probably the best game in the series so I would play that one over all others. Then Demon's Souls then Dark Souls 2.

My recommendation is to start with Bloodborne if you have a PS4. I found it to be the most straight forward and accessible game.
