Yes, in the beginning you will die alot and run the chance of losing them. So yes, use them when you get the chance.

Yep, learned that the hard way. I was cruising along pretty good then ran into a black knight. He kicked my butt and lost all my souls.

Havel? The fat guy at the bottom of the tower? If you're low level he is going to be very very tough, and will take you a while. It's best to roll from his attacks, backstab, repeat.

Havel? Does he look really fat and and ha a dragon tooth (big club looking thing)? He will one shot you no matter what so you have to roll and avoid getting hit. It's possible to beat him at a low level. I beat him with a new character without leveling up but it took 30+ backstabs and it wasn't easy. Since you're new, I'd just come back once you have better gear and stats. He drops the best ring in the game

Im working on collecting all the good rings now. I just got the ring from the great hollow that ups your stamina recovery. This, stacked with the grass crest shield and mask of the child will jut about double my stamina recovery speed. Not to mention adding some of those green things to boost it.

Killed the taurus demon on 2nd shot, ran back to upgrade my dude, got killed by some fricker with a spear who snuck up behind me. Sweet.
