Critical failures that you like

I'm stealing a topic that already exists somewhere, but what games have been received poorly by fans/critics do you actually enjoy?
For me, my latest discovery is Homefront the Revolution. It's like Far Cry set in the Deus Ex Universe. It has absolutely nothing to do with the original 2011 game (also good). Once you get past that and accept it for what it is, it's not the best FPS ever made, but there's fun to be had here, and you can get copies for PS4/Xbox One dirt cheap now.
It's an obvious beneficiary of a development team that spent a lot of time post-launch patching the game and fixing performance issues even though it flopped both in terms of sales and critical acclaim.

I loved Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. It was similar to God of War but better in some ways. It wasn't very popular but it did get a sequel that I never played.

Does Mass Effect 3 count? I mean it made piles of cash but it sure received a huge pile of hate when released. When I played the patched / fixed version in 2015, I thought it was fantastic.
Yes Scruffy. You wrong!

FFXlll. Wasn't much of a failure but it isn't liked by many. It was just a copy pasta X with better visuals, soundtrack, and combat system.

I played the hell out of Rise of the Robots on my SNES. Was the gameplay as good as Capcom or SNK fighters of the time? No. But something about that game just did it for me.

Star Wars Episode 1 the video game. I remember being a kid and being insanely hyped for this game. It was delayed repeatedly, and I ended up canceling my pre-order, although I did rent the game and ended up buying it used way later. I would replay the Tatooine level over and over again killing the slave children and Anakin's mom, watching all the characters freak out. I had never seen that level of interaction in a game before
Arcania is a pretty solid action-RPG that reminds me of a low budget version of The Witcher III. It's basically Gothic 4 but made by a new developer, and while it is much more linear, the combat isn't great but is functional unlike many RPGs designed by small European studios.
Star Ocean 5. I don't feel like this game received the budget it should have. The game world is tiny, and you're constantly ping-ponging back and forth between the same areas over and over. It got criticized for bad side quest design, but I've found that most side quests in JRPGs are the same in a lot of ways (kill x of y or collect some thing). The graphics are great, the music is good, and the battle system is fantastic.
The story isn't bad. It actually starts off like an episode of Star Trek where an indigenous people come into contact with a space-faring advanced civilization, but it just kind of loses steam near the end.

Ryse:Son of Rome
What can I say I'm a graphics whore and this game still is one of the best looking games on console. As simplistic and repetitive as it is I still enjoying playing it from time to time.
Mass Effect Andromeda:
I loved the Mass Effect series and while this game is a narrative and at times mechanical disappointment I still enjoy exploring the Helius cluster. I like some of the characters too.

There was another based on Episode One that was like a two player beat em up. It was a shite game but I loved the sound effects and music.

I thought the game was good. I would be upset though if I paid full price for it. The multiplayer is surprisingly underrated though.

Jedi Power Battles? See I didn't like that one as much as the original game, but I did enjoy the GBA version.
Star Wars Obi-Wan is the best game based on Episode 1. I wish they'd have released it on PC so I could play it again

Speaking of Episode 1. Star Wars Pod Racer was legit. I could play that game for hours trying to tune up my pods.

I wouldn't say it was a failure but I think I give FF XV way more credit than most people. I didn't agree with a lot of the backlash the game got.

XV or XIII? Most people liked XV.

quote:A shite ton of people bitched about the plot in XV when it released, that may have changed with subsequent patches and DLC releases, but I remember people complaining about the plot being hard to grasp or hollow. I didn't necessarily agree, but I also watched both the movie and the anime mini-series they released for it so I guess I had a better understanding of the underlying plot going in.
Most people liked XV.

It used an old CryEngine 2.5 when we already had games running on CryEngine 3 a few year prior.
Graphics aren't that great.

Also mark me down for being a fan of Star Fox Adventures. You either love it or hate it, apparently. That game got the absolute most out of the graphical capabilities of the GameCube.

RAGE, the ending was slapped together but the game is very fun.

Lightning Returns was great. I adored the first Nier.
Not much else that I really liked. A bunch of very underrated titles though.

CryEngine 2.5? I though it used Cryengine 4.

One game that I really like and is one of the few games I've completed 100% is Kingdoms of Amalur.
It has good reviews but the lack of sales and popularity led to the devs bankruptcy.
But as a game it is a blast to play, and if you delve in the story it fleshes out many standard fantasy niches.

It used 4. No idea where he is getting 2.5.
"Ryse was the first game to utilise the 4th generation CRYENGINE which boasted being capable of rendering more than 100 characters on on screen at any given time and character models being indistinguishable between cutscenes and gameplay."
