I know the feeling. In my current game I went from a super power in the medieval period to Persia and Russia's punching bag in the industrial and modern eras. :|

I try to stagger my approach to advancing. I almost never get to Classical and Medieval eras first but parlay my peacemongering advantage into tech-ing up into the Industrial/Modern. The game is also quite cruel in its distribution of resources, some games I won't have a single damn iron resource and I peer into my neighbors territory and see that he/she has two +6 iron resources.

Yah Ive definetly had my arse handed to me numerous times by the AI. I cant really compete past normal difficulty.

I think Prince is the difficulty where the AI advantage isn't overwhelming. Sometimes I just get a spawn next to two aggressive civilizations and then get bombarded with barbarians and then find out I have no good resources. I can handle everything but being handicapped by lack of resources, it seems like everything that is good prior to the industrial era requires iron.

I liked the xbox version.

Picked up V and played it a couple times. After playing Revolution, it took me a while to get used to the slower game play.

Now that I'm out of books to read at the moment, it's time to play an epic match during the nights.

I know this will sound condescending from a PC elitist but Civilization Revolutions (console versions) removes a lot of the things that makes it so enthralling on the PC. I've heard it's a good game, but any of the PC series (1-5) will out-do it.

it just scratches the surface on what you can do in the computer version. Think they are trying to appeal to the younger generation with the more cartoon-y animations.

Never played V. My computer can't run it (not an OT baller.)

I love the series though. I have Chronicles, the box set with I through IV and the extras (DVD and card game).

Yea I think I'm going to follow that approach in my next game. I've found that allying with City States helps out a lot, particularly when they have resources you don't have.

I've never been able to successfully get a bunch of City-States to side with me. The enemies always pay them way more than they are worth, and they have defense ratings of capitals so I don't bother taking them. If you are searching for a particular luxury resource to satisfy the demands of the people, they can be worth a temporary alliance.

I always go back to II. It's my favorite version.

I usually play on the lower to medium difficulties. The harder levels require too much micromanagement and it takes away from the enjoyment. I usually try to get my government to Democracy as soon as possible for the productivity boost. Then I build the UN so other civs have to accept my treaties or cease fires, and I can maintain a small defensive military while I build my spaceship.
