I'm focused on my hero's the more attacks you do the stronger they grow then you can earn 40gems a day by logging in every day, doing 10 arenas, collecting X amount of resources.
Then I went defense units/army camps/and my storages.....
I got my hero's from gems and I also go and earn the free gems by downloading apps and playing then deleting them

I had this until the other day. Had a screwed up layout but fence all the way around with most it level 7 or 8. Town Hall at 9. Defense towers at 10 and then upgraded them and they went back to shooting level 1 stuff. All my mining stuff was at level 9. Kept getting beat constantly. Trained all the first level fighters and had unlocked 2 more. I just got tired of it for now. I may reinstall it and start over. I saw a bunch of different lay outs while attacking so will see if a different lay out helps.

once you get the attack towers to lvl 10, the good thing seems to be to upgrade them to the archer towers. I always get wrecked by archer towers when i am attacking.

I had 3. I made one magic, one bombs, and the other an archer. The archer then changed to just shooting 1 or 2 arrows out as it appears to have to be leveled all the way back up again and it doesn't (or didn't look like it) carry over the damage it had at a level 10. I may have not know what to do though. So it could be on me

Plus putting the heros you not using in the defense weapons to increase their stats helps

that is new from the update early last week. I wish they ahd done that a while ago as i consumed quite a few lvl 60 heros...
