Can anyone explain Disney Infinity 3.0?

Bought the game/pack last night for my son and I have no idea what I'm doing. It came with 2 Star Wars characters and some play set piece. I also bought a bunch of other characters (Thor, Iron Man, Groot, Mike Wazowski, etc.) Turn on the game and it plays some star wars level. But I have no idea how to use all the other characters. I placed Thor on the base and it just showed him in some empty world where you could fly and throw his hammer. Same with Mike Wazowski. I keep seeing how this is some complete game, so I know there's more to it.
What am I missing?
What's a toy box?
How do I do more with Thor?
Do I need more play set pieces?
????????

It's alot of damn work to really get your money's worth.
The best, easiest option is to just play the "games" that come with each character group. They are the little octagon pieces. But only characters applicable to that environment will work (i.e. no storm trooper in the avengers game). You can do 2 player in that mode.
The 2nd easiest way is to download toy boxes that disney, or other users, have built. They are usually play-style specific (i.e. driving, fighting, shooting, etc...) and vary in quality, but they can keep the kids busy, and you can use any character.
You can also make your own toy box, but that's pretty difficult and time consuming. You're literally building a level from scratch using their pre-fabbed templates. I've never had the patience to do that.

So basically I need to buy a Marvel play set piece so that I can play a game with Thor and Iron Man (and others when I get them)?

Yes, but I thought one would have came with it when you purchased the character, similar to what you got with the Star Wars pack. It didn't?

Avengers play set is only compatible with 2.0

I saw something advertised the other day on TV, looked like a cool little Star Wars game. Thought about ordering it for PS3. Looked into it, realized I would need these stupid fricking action figures...wtf? I just wanted to play a video game. No thanks.

My son talked me into 2.0. Never again. I hate Infinity. Skylanders is so much more fun when it comes to figurine games. Looking forward to Superchargers.
