Anyone have one of those? It looks cool but some of the online reviews say the wireless controllers are crap and the games lag.

Can you plug the controllers in directly to make it work? Are the complaints overblown? Or should I avoid that system?

Get a raspberry pi and make your own emulator.

This is probably the better route but it depends on how much time (and desire) you have for tweaking and configuring it. It can also do much more than just emulate a handful of games for one system. I'm using a Raspberry Pi 2 for playing the entire NES, SNES, and Genesis US catalogs but I spent decent chunk of time getting it setup exactly like I wanted it.

If you are interested in going down that road, these Youtube videos are a good place to start and I can probably answer any questions you might have.

If you go the emulator route with a computer or raspberry pi make sure to get a good game pad. I thought emulators sucked this entire time when in reality it was my crappy game pad causing me to not be able to beat the first level of Mario. I plugged in my new ps4 controller to my iMac and all of a sudden boom it all works really well. If that Atari thing doesn't have good controllers avoid it like the damn plague.

I recommend these if you don't plan on playing anything beyond the SNES era and are fine with wired.

Buy USB extension cables off of Monoprice depending on your situation.

There are wireless options (you can even use a Dualshock 4 with a Raspberry Pi) but I haven't messed with those much.
